I agree. Ilive in a small rural town, loads of back yard famers and some large scale. Everyone knows each other and if you don't know a person about 100 of your friends or neighbours you come into contact on a daily basis know the person. When I moved here it was hard to be accepted. Took me three years for the towns people to accept me. I was severely outcasted and so were my kids. Even though they wer ein school they were never invited to any events or parties and trying to volunteer for school events was impossible I always got the thanks anyways but we got enough people. Turns out that city people buy land up here for grow ops and so they don't trust anyone that moves up here from the city.

The cruelty cases we have encountered as a community up here are few but when they do happen and I will say a few have already happened this year more than we want to admit....this year alone there have been 3 dogs shot in the head and left to die out in the bush. only the dogs didn't die and were later found nearly starving with infected bullet wounds. All dogs had to be euthanized because of their injuries. but the one that took the cake was a backyard farmer from a nearby village of 300 people who took his 6 month old labrador, poisoned him and when the dog vouldn't move anymore placed him a bad and dumped him in the river. So happened an officer for the ministry of environment was checkign out the area and caught him. The guy is serving 6 months in jail for animal cruelty. We have one judge up here and he is a huge animal lover and his punishments are harsh, none of us feel though his punishment for this guy was harsh enough!!! So the chicken thing, do I believe my elderly neighbours...absolutely. I am not gullible and just because someone has never heard of it does not mean it hasn't happened. I love y comunity and the towns people but that behavious is shameful and not something the town would like to be known for. I guess every town has a few bad seeds....sad but true!!! I took of all this as a learning opportunity, and now I know why so many of the backyard farmers have their own chickens. Because its better knowing where you eggs are coming from. I was urged to get my own chickens by several neighbours. I am happy they educated me and my family about the issue!!

I am wondering if you could convert the cages with a bit of ingenuity and come up with something useable. Maybe rabbit hutch type cages or convert to larger type pens. I just hate to see all that cage wire even though it was used inhumanely

go to waist. I am sure someone could convert it somehow.

no they were chicken cages, about 12 X 12 not sure how high but not were high at all. its fine to have nesting boxes that size a little higher of course but to keep them locked up all the time and do what he did, just plainly gross!!!

the cages are steel, look to have been made in a factory. I guess if they cold remove the top and the dividers they could actually be used for something useful. they span the lengh of the barn. As a matter of fact withthe top gone and the dividers gone they could make really good hanguing hay mangers for our horses and my neighbours horses. Good idea!!

I think the suitable punishment for this case is to take the old farmer (my he rot in you know where), cut his legs off to his knees, tie his hands behind his back and confine him to living in a small dog cage for the reaminder of his days. There he would see how bad it feels to be treated like trash. The nerve of some people

Hey guys, I got to thinking with this topic and this other one this week that led to a video...

Why don't we have a topic for all the articles, videos, etc. like this... you know the ones you pass on to your family that think you're NUTS for raising your own egg and/or meat birds?

Maybe add in WHO did the article or video... IE if just a regular town paper vs Humane Society. Some will assume that the HS is biased, but perhaps a plain reporter isn't?

I think that'd be really handy for peeps who ask about chicken keeping. We could refer them not only to the BYC, but also to that topic so they can see for themselves one more reason, not cost related, that makes raising your own worth it.

Might be hard to find a link for articles done by small papers, unless it's picked up by a bigger one... maybe those could be scanned, or if you're really patient typed, with bibliography info so if someone was doubting they could verify.

Could even have sections maybe.... Egg Farms (and the different types so peeps can really understand what the heck 'cage free' means), Meatie Farms, Turkey Processors, Cattle, Pigs... could put in linkage to any of those... maybe updating the opening post?

Thoughts? Am I just nuts to think this is a worthwhile endeavor? Or would others be willing to contribute and/or interesting in reading?
