The Tractor Supply staff have no idea of sex. They told a friend of ours that the two Pekin ducklings they bought were a male and a female because one was a little bigger than the other. LMAO. BOTH Pekins have since started laying eggs

Well I have some interesting news. I kept telling my husband that I thought that one of our hens was actually a rooster. He was like no no no they said at tractor supply they were all females. Well our hen crowed this week...hmmmm. I have never seen a hen crow.

It happens. I had a hen crow. She laid eggs and then crow. My daughters hen also crows. It is usually when there use to having a rooster around and then the rooster is gone. This was the case in both my hen and my daughters.

most hatcheries sell pullets with an 85-95% guarantee, and most feed stores get in pullets. He is probably one of those.

And on the chick thing, they can go up to 3 days without food/water. They absorb the yolk sac right before they hatch, that's why hatcheries can mail dat old chicks. If they where under a hen, it would give time for all the chicks to hatch before mama had to get off the nest to get food for them.

So I'm thinking of keeping one of my three AM boys. Has anybody every tried any methods to keep the crowing down? I don't think my neighbors will appreciate it or my hubby for that matter. Anyway, I've read about rooster collars. I'm skeptical and don't want to hurt the guy. What do you guys think?

I've had 3 roos at one time. Only have 2 right now, but I'm raising my 3rd roo now.

My pens are far enough from the house that I can hear them crow, but it won't wake me when I'm sleeping. Our neighbors are even farther from the pens, so I don't have to worry about neighbors.

Personally I dont think it's a good idea to try and keep a rooster from crowing. It's natural for them. Best just not keep them if it will become an issue.

I'm definitely going to feel it out. If they are not too loud, obviously there is no issue. I am concerned about upsetting my neighbors or my hubby. I was just curious if anybody had tried anything or knew any tricks that I don't. Plus, I do feel kinda bad about hatching them and rehoming them.

I have two American Serama hens, they're indoor pets (have their new diapers on order, should have them in soon!)...one or both (not sure which) make a sound reminiscent of crowing.
They're almost a year old, they were around roosters when they were younger, but it's been awhile since they were around any.
It doesn't happen all the time, and it's not obnoxiously loud either. I just ask my girls if they're having an identity crisis...lol.

Fingers crossed that all my chicks are hens as roosters are illegal in Roswell. I have one neighbor who calls the cops on all sorts of dumb things. Pretty sure she would not appreciate a rooster. . She's very rude to all neighbors, so it sort of makes me want to get one just to spite her.

My pen is roughly 100 feet from the house, and it doesn't wake us up, either.

Get one and call it a "pet" and it gets through the loophole of MOST laws. As long as the law doesn't actually specify roosters being illegal, you should be fine. But most laws either specify "farm animals" or "livestock".
