YO GEORGIANS! :)

Hi everyone, hope your weekend is going well.

I just wanted to say that I'm taking a small break from the forums after a really hard week at the farm. The flock of 10 Ancona ducks and 3 Welsh Harlequin that I absolutely adored were lost to an unnamed event this week. Five bodies were found, very little damage, and scattered throughout the 15 acres. No trace of the other eight, no tracks discernable, and somehow the chaos escaped the game camera wHich is mostly focused on the rabbit barn. The duck pen (uncovered) was undisturbed, and no litter of feathers. I'm thinking two - legged predators, with a dog (or the dog came later and got the Ducks left behind and out of the pen). I'm devastated.

The only bright spot is the few EE eggs I've got hatching, and the 11 CCL eggs in Lockdown. I have about five turkey eggs about to go into lockdown, but I'm not so optimistic about them. It seems that they are really sensitive to the vibration of the egg turner, as most seem to quit. I'm thinking I'll try hand turning a batch next. Anyhow, have a good week all, and I will be back in a bit.

I hurt for you! Am so sorry that you lost your wonderful ducks. I may have some runner duck eggs if you want some. They are spotty as far as hatching, but I do get some cute little runners from them. Hope you find out for sure what happened and if it was someone, hope you prosecute them!

That's awful! I'm sorry to hear it.

I need an Ameracauna pullet or female chick. Looking for someone around me....GAM is close to me
I lost my Ameracauna...Helen. She was snatched by a fox a few weeks ago the my ornery RIR was snatched near my front darn porch!!!
Samne predator my neighbor saw him circling his house to leave the property area ugggghhh.

I wish I could help, but right now I have only TWO hens at POL. Predators have pretty much wiped out my flock this year.

Ok, as much as I really want to discuss what I'd like to do to whatever or whomever took/killed my ducks, life moves on - quickly- at the farm. Well, at the house too. I'm looking at two little CCL peeps, newly hatched, and I don't see a clear "male" or "female". I'm sure that's because I don't know what I'm looking at from first-hand experience though. I've seen photos, but I only confused myself by reading too much on the internet. So @Roboduck and @Rocky Rhodes; what do you think?

I don't know what they are either except CUTE!!

Well, I have two hens that are determined to give me more babies this year, no matter what I decide. I say that because they are both BROODY.

One is a Sumatra, who is faithfully sitting on 7 eggs for about a week now. They're still separated so the only possible offspring are purebred Sumatra. The other is a little tiny bantam hen I call "Mommy Ommy" because she went broody three times last year and successfully raised a group each time. The eggs under her will either be her own (mixed breed possible frizzle) or from the cochin frizzle hen (bred to cochin frizzle roo). Since there is no smooth-feathered roo to breed to the frizzle hen anymore, her babies could end up being smooth, normal frizzle, and curlies (double-dose frizzle).

Meanwhile, the turkey poults are doing great - ever so curious, and FRIENDLY! When I first show up, they get a bit scared, then they realize who it is, and start running up to my hands to say hello and see if I have any goodies for them. And all new hatchlings are also doing really good, minus a few who are hatching with leg problems. But their mommy was free-range and **** near impossible to catch, so I'm not surprised if she had vitamin deficiencies. She's gone too, though.

So even though I gave up until next year, it seems that things are already looking up, everyone is getting healthy again, and these two hens are determined to help replenish the flock!
