YO GEORGIANS! :)

So we are on our way home from vacation. My hatch is due Friday so I've got to get my turner out and humidity up when I get there!!

I also left a first-time broody on some of those eggs.. According to my friend she hasn't moved at all as far as he can tell.. So looks like she'll make it! Of course, the fact that I pretty much did all the work for her helped.. ;)

I just killed a copperhead, but it bit one of our young chickens. I'm so sad
Ugh... So sorry :( I almost got bit by a copperhead last week. It was under the coop and I could hear Pepper, the protective broody going crazy. I thought it was just her annoying broodiness, but I ended up looking down, and saw it coiled up and hissing at me. I was probably 6 inches from it. Scariest thing I've encountered recently, the thing looked to be at least 3ft long. I ran to get my dad to shoot it, because I wasn't about to, but by the time I got down there the chicken had chased it away. I was wearing flip flops... I now always wear muck boots

Ack!!! I encountered a baby copperhead a couple years ago without knowing it.. BAREFOOT.. My friend came along a minute after me and saw it in the mud under the boat I had just flipped. :shudder:

Not likely.  The younger the snake the less control they have over the dose they inject.  An adult snake can actually give you a dry bite if they so choose.  A healthy adult, albeit not a fun time, could possibly survive a copperhead bite without treatment.  But I wouldn't think a chicken would stand a chance. Blue kote might do for a predator attack to avoid infection but it won't do any good against hemotoxins or neurotoxins.
I didn't think so, I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm so sad. Do snake repellents really work?? Anyone???

I personally think snake repellents are a scam. You would literally have to cover your yard with it otherwise they can avoid it. They don't exactly take up a lot of space on the ground. And while snakes do "smell" with their tongues, the dangerous ones in Georgia with the exception of coral snakes are all pit vipers who hunt visually by heat signature as well as tasting the air. I would have to see mothballs deter a snake to believe it.

Those are better than flip flops but Georgia is blessed with pit vipers that can bite through a lot of boots.

I would like to know what the symptoms are for this snake bite. I just wonder if any of my chickens have died of snake bites.  I've lost a few chickens over the years that are unexplained.  Just found them dead in the yard after looking healthy earlier in the day.  Thanks.  But, so sorry about your chicken.  Hope she makes it.
I heard them making lots of racket, went to check on them. They were all huddled in a corner of the run. I scattered them and they were all protecting the injured bird. I blew in her feathers to look for an injury, saw blood. The chick is acting lethargic, sleepy not moving much. Steady breathing but blood coming out of her beak, not good. Poor babe
