Yep, that's what I'm thinking about doing. I think Biglots carries the rope lights year round but you may be able to find some now that the stores have Christmas decor out.Even the rope type that are encased in thick plastic! Even though you wouldn't hang within reach. It'd still be an extra insurance from breaking the glass if it were to fall.
About a light.. It can just be a regular bulb right? Doesn't have to be heat lamp? I'm not comfy leaving that much heat all day but I think I could rig up a normal bulb above the laying boxes and plug it in as I leave of a morning.. Would that work?
So sorry about your losses.Sunflour- glad to hear it's not just me!!
Flowerbh- I hear ya, I really don't want to use a light though as there's no convenient way to do so having to be at work so early.. BUT I may reconsider. We'll see. I jut do NOT remember having this issue last fall! Oh. You know what!! That may be bc last fall was when my flock was raided and I was rebuilding. Tht makes me feel a bit better...
Robo/GAM- I flaked last time I know, but I'd be glad to come help process. Last time I had totally forgotten my Dr appt, so that screwed things up.
Took my dogs out at 6:30 and something was lying in the front yard- my big dog walked over and sniffed it and it hobbled off slowly, like maybe a 'possum would do.. Got worried it was something sick so came in for a light.
It was one of my off-colored cockerels that I've had penned separately for processing. He's pretty beat up. Walked out to the pen (this one is very makeshift so that's why my "less valuables" were there).. Couldn't locate the second cockerel. So once it's daylight well go out and cull the injured one an try to find the second. Maybe he made it.It had to have happened while we were out for the evening- if it were overnight the dogs would have woke us up.![]()
Anyway it sucks but I'm just thankful it was culls and not my layers or breeders!!
