YO GEORGIANS! :)

Hahaha! Well, the blasted hawks made away with a 3rd pullet this morning! Right from my backyard! The EE has gotten the hint, and sticks close to the big girls now....but my kids will be upset. We haven't even told them about the barred rock getting snatched last week. My neighbors flock hasn't been touched, but she has a big Delaware roo protecting his lady friends. We'll be stringing the backyard with fishing line this afternoon, and hanging reflective tape.

I use to put my youngsters in an area in my backyard that is just a strip piece of land only about 9' wide and 50 feet long. It was bordered on the backside by a steep hill that we terraced and the house on the other side. I thought it would be very protected. But every chick I lost to a hawk was in that location. I finally decided to use umbrellas out there when I put the chicks out there. Just opened up about 4 of those big rain umbrellas and never lost another chick. It gave them a place to hide and from above, you don't see much activity. (We went up the hill to look down) Anyway, that way we could just pick up the umbrellas every day (and when the renters come, they don't see anything chickeny) We don't put chicks there anymore since we now have all of them enclosed in their huge backyard-under-all-the-trees-fenced in yard area. We just had to corral them because they ate everything and when you are renting your home as a vacation rental, it is nice to have flowers and grass! hhahahah. Not to mention that when the renters wanted us to let them out of the coop (before the fenced area), they didn't realize that the chickens would hop in their opened trunks and windows and lay eggs in their cars! Along, with other surprises! LOL. Now, it is a win-win thing we have. The money from their eggs paid for 300 feet of fence and they are happy to run around and I am happy to have grass and flowers again. I do grow fodder for them to eat, too!

This is where they use to run! SEE GRASS AND PLANTS?? Well, they ate all that and I had to start over again! Rascals!

That's a great idea about the umbrellas! I had thought about growing fodder for them, what kind did you have the best results with?

I'm happy to report I spoke too soon! We were putting Christmas lights on the front hedges, and something started clucking at my husband. The dingbat was under them, happy as all get out.:p
