YO GEORGIANS! :)

And as far as heat.. My small coop is in heavy shade and the large one is totally open-air. The shade is the best defense IMO.

Well i went to sell my show girl rooster today and as i went to separate the roo from the pullet i realized they were both roo's so now i am down to only one low quality show girl pullet.

I've been MIA lately. Had to do some rain-proofing on the big coop and build a baby coop for some new chicks.

I bought an Aracauna, an Easter Egger, and an Olive Egger. They are 8-10 weeks old and just moved into their 4 x 4' coop last weekend.

What is this about a swap in February? Can anyone attend?

I'm in Flowery Branch (Hall County) and only 3 of my girls are laying (2-year-old Australorp is molting) and they've decreased production so I'm really hoping to buy a couple dozen eggs to tide me over until they are able to give me a dozen eggs a week.

And btw-do we have a Chicken Whisperer to explain to Tender (molting) that January is NOT a good time to molt in GA? lol! She's doing fine with it, but I've been worried sick with these crazy temps and rain we've been having.

Do some research on using cedar with chickens. There has been so much debate about whether or not cedar is safe for chickens. It has to do with the oils in the wood and the vapor the oils give off. Supposedly, it is harmful to chickens. But, I think old aged cedar might be ok because the oils have dried out. But, that was just what one article said. There is just a lot out there and a lot of debate. Some people say pine has just as much toxic fumes as does cedar. Just read about it before you commit.

Haven't looked at your design yet....will in a minute, but I do not like the corrugated plastic you are talking about. We tried that.....it leaked badly no matter what we did. We used all the correct hardware to put it up with and everything. We even tried spraying it with that stuff on tv....that no leak stuff. (Like the guy uses in a boat and doesn't get leaks anymore. Ha!) We ended up taking it up and adding a whole roof of plywood, then felt, then a sheet of heavy plastic and then put a metal on top. The main coop has about 5 separate roofs we have done. Each on top of the other and we finally have a dry area! Give me a minute to look at your design.

@Flowerbh, I am so very thankful for the wonderful advice. You are right, cedar is a no-no for chickens. One of the books I have said shavings were the problem but boards were ok, doing some research I found evidence to the contrary.

I see T1-11 mentioned a lot, I have not seeing it a HD/Lowes, but will look for it more carefully. I hope it is not too heavy. That is the hardest part about trying to make this a moveable tractor, finding lightweight materials that are suitable.

I looked for others that had used the corrugated plastic and found mixed reviews. It seems that the polycarbonate is ok, but the cheaper one is not as good. I also see that it can be hard in the heat, planning on having them moving around in the woods/ shaded areas for summer, so hopefully that will work. I am thinking they will only "work" the veggie garden where is very sunny in the late fall to early spring.

thank you again!

Thank you, @carcar80. I am taking your advice to heart, and I am now planning on having the tractor in the heavy shade for the warmer months. I have lots of shade, though I will have to do some work to get parts of it more level for rotation.

I once read, that a US President told Americans to have 2 chickens per person per household. I can't remember what year this was in our history and remember what resource I was reading. Anyone out there in Georgia know about this particular history? Thanks!

This poster is what came to my mind when I saw your question, but it isn't saying a certain president so Flower is correct about Hoover. http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/uncle-sam-wants-you-to-raise-chickens.aspx
