Owl visited this morning. Took me a bit to figure out what it was cuz tracks started from nowhere, sometimes had no deep "feet" impressions yet how could it be a bird? Owls don't break my wire so we're good;-)

Does anybody know of or have any guinea keets? My husband and I are looking for some of those as well as chicks that I have listed before. If they do are they will to ship them? I am okay with waiting until its warmer. I just cant seem to find anyone local who has anything I am looking for. Everyone seems to be at least 2 hours away or more. I plan on going to a couple of swap meets here soon. Those are even an hour and half away so long drives for me and my 2 girls just see if they might have anything I am looking for.

So I have a complaint. I know its been cold and then warm and then cold again. My EE started laying a few weeks ago. The Brahma and RIR molted during Nov and Dec. However, my EE stopped laying about 1.5 weeks ago and the others have yet to start. I am getting frustrated with my girls because that's the perk of having hens as pets. Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem. Our weather pattern is a bit unstable. Somedays its up to 75 degrees and others its high is around 50 like today. Could this be the problem. Help Please!!!

The number of hours during the day plays a huge part in it. They lay much better during the long days of summer than the short days of winter.

Yes, hens need 14 hours of daylight to lay eggs. I have a light that is connected to a timer that comes on every morning at 4:30 am and turns off at 7am. Also, an egg is mostly water, so a hen must have a lot of water at all times to help produce eggs. I have noticed that when my waterers freeze during the night and they have to wait for me to go out and remove the ice and give them fresh water, sometimes not until 9am (

), they produce less and smaller eggs. And yes, they can be stressed over the crazy weather!
