YO GEORGIANS! :)

Thanks for the welcome everyone!
Robo I'm planning on going to my "local" Tractor Supply, and the pullets they have are hatchery's mix breed layers. I'm not entirely sure if that means they're a mixture of different breeds, or if it means that each chick is some sort of mix, but that's what they have. I'm also going to try to find a silkie or two in their mixed bantam bin, as I've heard those have really good personalities for beginners.

Well. Finishing up my worst hatch of 2015, boo. Out of seven eggs I got three chicks, and one has the prolapsed navel.

The power went out Thursday morning for about an hour but I swear I didn't think that would hurt them, being day 20 and all.. My guess is that's what happened?

The only other thing I did different was putting a piece of paper towel under the eggs to make clean-up easier. That wouldn't have hurt, right?[/quote

The paper towel could have increased the humidity too high. The chicks may have drowned.

I think they are hybrid layers - sex links, likely. That's what they looked like at my TSC in Canton.

I have used the paper towels under the eggs in the past and I think it obstructs the air flow especially when the paper towels get wet. I have eggs on lockdown now without the paper towels.
I removed the egg turner. I raised the wire rack to keep the eggs in the same temperature zone and placed the eggs directly on the wire rack. I think I will have better air flow this way. I will find out in a few days. :)
