YO GEORGIANS! :)

Probably your city ordinances trump the County's but I'm not sure. I would check with City Hall to know. Don't want you to loose them either..........Well Friends in Georgia, looks like the mud has brought out the varments on our farm..... hawks flying low, raccoons, possoms and more. First predator death in years... One of my precious silkies. I know these things happen but soo soo hard and it's been 5 solid days of it. Well. so happy it's a dry out today. Been out in the mucky mucky mess for feeding and carrying for the animals. Is anyone dry in Georgia. Understand from my Farmer husband that there is a possibility of the white stuff on Saturday and a very very cold night tomorrow night. So tomorrow's chores include more wind proofing and coverings. Not just pens but also fruit trees, etc. But would I have it any other way? Absolutely not! So the wood stove is roaring now and hope all of you have a happy valentine's day.... Look what I got for Valentine's.... Actually a few days before........ Her Momma, Paula, had three beautiful babies.......This was the girl two hours after she was born! Do feel free to visit our blog if anyone likes and I'd love to know if there are any other GA bloggers too! http://thegarryfarm.blogspot.com/ Happy Valentines Day!
We also had nannies drop kids during this down pour. 3 nannies all had twins within 3 days of each other and another is due any day now!

I have a question regarding critter proofing my run. I have a 4x6 hen coop Im building and intend on make the run come right off of to the right. The run part will be about 6x8is and tall enough for my 6'10 1/2" hubby to walk around in with out hitting his head (hate that when it happens). I'm using hardware cloth as my wire to cover all of the sides and straight across the top (I have hawks, owls etc). My question is about the ground. I've seen completely covered ground area, open ground with the wire sunk in around the perimeter etc. Which is the best to avoid diggers?

My runs ground is clear but we put landscape timbers down around the bottom to prevent predators from shimmying under the fence. Also another alternative to putting wire over the top is using wildlife netting. So far I have not had any predators in my pen and I have witness our cats walking across the top and t has kept them out

I live on about 60 acres with all kinds of big and little critters that would love a chicken dinner. I'll have to do something strong across the top and how deep do you go along the sides? I have two German shepherds and a big ole english black lab that can dig a child size pool hole out of the ground in an afternoon. It's not them Im worried about though it's the night time wild critters. A neighbor in the area lost all his goats to a night time raid of coyotes.

Oh I understand about the animals hm here's and idea. How about dig a small trench around the edge of the run and fill it with concrete? Just a suggestion :) also, the reason animals don't like the wildlife netting is because it moves some when they step on it and usually deters them from going further

I'll check the netting out, um pouring a concrete moat not so sure about. How about the 12x12 garden pavers would that work? and how far inside the run wall to you have to protect from critter diggers? I'm ordering my baby girls ini the morning and would hate to raise them up only to turn them out and find a pile of feathers in the morning

Just had a run in with a hawk myself! Heard my girl making some very loud noises. Went to see and a huge hawk was sitting on top of her pen trying to get at her! He even bent the wire a bit. Luckily no one was hurt. Whew. My heart sank when I realized what could be potentially happening!

Maybe one paver on the inside and one on the outside? I'm not sure. Maybe someone more experienced will reply soon :) what' breeds are you ordering?
