YO GEORGIANS! :)

Chicks can go for at least 3 days without water or food. That is why hatcheries can send chicks in the mail without problems with feeding/watering them. Congrats on your little ones! Love those dark eggs! I am hoping my BCM has dark eggs like yours!

I have heard it is not good to remove chicks from the incubator if you have other eggs that are pipping. The change in the incubator is dramatic when you lift the lid. Think of it as when you are taking a shower and then pull back the shower curtain/door. The room fills with humidity and the mirror gets all fogged over and you get cold! Well, it's kind of like that with eggs, but reversed. The membrane inside the shell does a shrink job on the chick inside. So, don't worry about the little chick, they will be fine for 3 days. And, their chirping helps the others to want to get out and play!

Good advice - I found the 3 day rule today. We had one more hatch today - the Welsummer (dark spotted eggs) look like they are on a 22 day schedule. We will give them till tomorrow before we crack the incubator open - hopefully by then what is going to hatch, hatches.

Because the Welsummer has such a thick coating on it's shell, it is harder for the chicks to pip thru. Just give them extra time. I am wanting some Welsummers. Should I order them from the hatchery or get some from you? Let me know ASAP. Remember, I will be meeting up with you in March to get those other chicks we ordered.

I'm getting chicks too, what kind are you getting?

Dang it! I was up all night thinking of what I was going to say for the 35,000th post and what my 35,000th post award acceptance speech was going to be. Guess y'all will just have to wait til I get the 40,000th post.

Here's my next batch in! The Leghorn air cells actually don't look too shabby; a couple are saddled, and the others are loose but not detached so they should do great! I'll probably let them all go a day or two without turning just to give them a tad more time.

Now to quickly sneak them in while the others are hatching.. A couple are from today and are super-cold so I want to let them warm a bit first.

I adore my Brahmas. They are LF though. They're not the most space- or feed-efficient, but they are THE most easy-to-deal with birds I've ever had.

Oh wow..They must be big. I almost bought some years ago. I thought, since I have the bantams, I should get some big ones. Went to see some and was AMAZED. They were huge, I was like, let me think about it and I will get back with you. I already knew they were too big. Same thing happened with Cochins. I had almost every color bantam. I almost bought standard and they were huge. I did buy two from a guy in Carrollton who shouldn't be selling. Brought them home and both were sick and died within 2 days. He has more than he can take care of and many are sick. His name was Randy S. Have to think about his last name. Shoemake or something like that. I called him and he said, they weren't sick when they were here. Well since they were sick when I got home, I am sure they were sick there. Have to be very careful who you buy from!

Thanks for the heads-up. Yes, it can be very scary buying from new people! That's why I love having this board for reviews and references.

Four out of the six MFD have pipped now. Woot!!

So I let my Brahmas out since I'm home all afternoon. Figured they'd mill around the yard a bit and then hang out underneath the pole barn like usual.

NOPE.

Hubby and I just went out and every last one of them is pecking around in the grass, soaked to the bone. :(

Hubby says they will all be chicken-sickles in the morning. I know they'll dry but I do feel like a heel at this point.
