Finally made it by the breeders to pick up my replacement Cream Legbar and Swedish Isbar. He was out of blue Isbars so we went with a black Isbar pullet that is around 4 months old instead. Also picked up another Cayuga to be a brooder mate for the Legbar.





 
Ok, Has anyone tried or have experience using the water cups, in place of the nipples. As much as I have not had much luck shopping at TSC, I did purchase two packets of these water cups. Modified my piping and installed three of these units. Seems like they have a very lousy spring assembly to allow water into the cup for the chickens to drink. Seems like in checking, my chickens have not been able to get water into these cups, and the several times I checked on them the cups were dry and when I tripped the lever to allow water into the cups the chickens came running like they were dry and thirsty. I thought I would try using these, as the nipples leak or drip water and seems like I have a lot of water and wet area on the ground under them, and trying to find a solution so I don't have wet and damp ground under the nipples. Anybody have experience with the cups?

My cups keep water in them but the birds seem to prefer the nipples. Then again they have had the nipples for a year and the cups for 2 months.

These don't leak and my chickens will use them, the bottom nipples or a fountain. You can shop and fine a cheaper price.

Ok I need to make sure I'm treating my chick correctly, I have a chick that has a wry neck and the post said to treat it with vit. E and selenium so I have crushed up a 1/4 of the pill and mixed it with the oil and have given it to my chick and it is still eating and drinking, it's condition isn't that bad cause I just caught it so it is still able to be in with the others, so what are the lasting effects? I understand wry neck is caused by a vitamin deficiency. Would you go a head and cull or treat?

Ok. You know I'd treat, but I'm a bit crazy maybe. Been through the wry neck with my 2 last year. I believe you were a big help in getting me through that. It took a long time, but there was a complete recovery. As far as lasting effects, Stanley's case was the worst, and he seems fine now. The only thing I notice that I assume is odd, is that whenever James crows, it's really high pitch & it makes Stanley shake his head like it's irritating. any high pitched sounds makes him do it. That's it. None of the other birds do it. I just remember having to mix the solution and giving the drops every three hours or so. I hope your little one gets better soon!

Thanks, I did catch it really early and it seems better and figured as long as it's eating/drinking I should try. I don't think it's getting better is my imagination
 
Morning everyone! happy april fools day.....

one more boring post about my incubator and mods. I wasn't happy with the way the insulators were, even with the foil faced insulation board. The heat was still enough that the screws were getting hot enough to soften the plastic lining and two of them fell off. So I removed them all, drilled holes through the top in the position of each insulator and used bolts through to the outside. I also bought the large fender washers to put between the insulator and the insulation, to prevent them from digging in. This has definitely stopped any heat transfer, feeling the ends of the bolts sticking out and they're not warm at all.

I played around with different settings, I have a thermometer and hygrometer at each level, 1 shelf for the turner, and two below for the hatching trays, all were stabilized and even top to bottom this morning. I have no water pan in it, and the humidity was at 30%. I actually drilled 2 more smaller holes in it last night because with the weather like it is I couldn't get it below 45%, so apparently the extra vent holes are intended for more fresh air exchange on bad weather days.....I know I can plug them if need be later. I also know I can bump the humidity up in it pretty quickly now, which was the problem originally...

so, after seeing it stabilzed, I moved my eggs from the borrowed styrofoam bator into the WCB! so I'm officially tracking, monitoring and keeping notes, and we'll see if this hatch goes better than the others I've done so far this year

I have 28 eggs in it, 12 australorp/leghorn cross from the son in law, 2 AM/leghorn cross, a dozen AM eggs and two of my olive eggs. Going to fill the rest of the turner up next week with AM eggs and some from my AM/australorp cross to get some more OEs
