YO GEORGIANS! :)

My 9 and a half week old rooster has what looks like an abnormal comb and no tail yet. About 4 of my other roosters do not have a tail yet and have pea combs. But all the hens from these chicks I bought off Craigslist have tails.

Males are usually slower feathering than females. In fact, some people look for chicks with more tail feathers when trying to pick girls. Give them time.

Help!

I really need help with my of chickens. She's my favorite and she is sick. I'm a newbie and I don't know what to do. She's not eating and she's just sitting on the ground. She isn't cooin. I stood her up to see if it's an injury or something but she just stood for a little and sat back down.

What is it? Can I save her? Anybody available to offer some help? She's my favorite one so I'm very upset about this. Other chickens are acting normal. They seem to be concerned about her until I put the food in the run.

Does she have a messy bottom? Is she poofy? You can check for a stuck or broken egg. Lube up and stick a finger gently in the vent. The oviduct goes up.

@brucifer I just have the feeders in them and tomorrow I will paint them and put them in their location!!!! I think I may love them more than the birds!!!! Thank you sooooo much

You have a lovely wife and son, I got lucky today and got to meet brucifer and his crew.

my new feeder stations, now come on rain, you can't get the food wet anymore!!!! Brucifer made these for me from a picture, wonderful job!!
Thanks, kat. After PMing each other back and forth so many times, it was great to finally meet you in person at your homestead in such a nice, pastoral setting. Lisa and I both enjoyed the photos you posted with your birds using the feeder stations. Building them is one thing, but seeing them used for their intended purpose gives me that warm, feathery feeling.

Oh and BTW, 70 quail eggs went into lockdown last night.
One interesting thing that I learned at the egg-candling class is that the state of Georgia doesn't consider quail and quail eggs as poultry for regulation purposes, so you can raise as many quail and sell as many quail eggs to your heart's content without state interference. I may give raising quail a try a little down the road. I love pickled quailed eggs, and I would like to try canning my own.

Also, do you know if a broody Silkie would/could successfully hatch quail eggs are raise the brood?

AC, very sorry to hear about your chicken troubles. Unfortunately, it comes with the territory with raising our beloved birds. As for your sick chicken, how old is it? Is it still a chick? Also, keep an eye on its stool, and let us know what it looks like. That can help us help you diagnose the problem. In the meantime, isolate the sick bird from the rest of the flock in case it has contracted something contagious. I use a cat carrier to isolate single birds, but even something as simple as a cardboard box will do.

Good morning, chicken friends!

Lazy one here...proofing cinnamon roll dough, making a strawberry cake with berries we picked this week, candling eggs (12 set/12 wiggly and going!), brooder tending and coop building. Toss in a little league game, and it's really the weekend.

Hope all is well with everyone.

also, quick question---it is getting quite hot here. how long do y'all think i need to keep a brooder plate on for these babies? they are 2.5 weeks now and getting quite plucky!

Sorry to hear that but we need more info. but get some save a chick or electrolyte chick powder, (available at TSC)good to keep on hand comes in little packs to put in the water to help her, pedilite will work in a pinch and the sugar will give her energy.

I think it would work and she may enjoy the hatch at 18 days instead of 21. My husband even likes them!!! I put some of the feeders down lower for the younger birds but I do think they are awesome.

looking at the birds they look pretty feathered out and I would think no heat during the day, my babies don't have heat during the day but if it's cool I do put it on at night, but I have some younger than yours.
