YO GEORGIANS! :)

I have 4 mature Isa Browns and they ARE laying machines. When they are happy and healthy they lay 2 eggs each day. I didn't know they have a shorter life span.... That may preclude any more from being added to these and the younger ones I have. Thanks for the information :) I'm getting clear pictures in the morning if it isn't raining again.
FYI: I made the mistake of getting attached to the chickens LOL Dear Hunny thinks they are freezer fodder...ummm No. They have names. If I name it, it isn't food.

I've read where ISA Browns need extra protein because they are such prolific layers of those large brown eggs. With four ISA hens, I'm sure there's no shortage of eggs at your house even through the Winter! lol

It's hard not to get attached to chickens. I'm afraid it's a sickness in which almost all of us here succumb. They are smart and entertaining birds. What's not to love about them? Okay, the bird poop and cleaning the coop, but besides that...lol

I have no problem slaughtering a meat bird, but if I EVER slaughtered one of my wife's named (pet) chickens, especially a Silkie!, I cringe thinking about the wrath that would follow.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing your photos!

This is me whining, but since I can't talk just about chickens, I'm distressed to say that my husband went to check on our lake property tonight and we were robbed---house broken into, guns stolen, electronics all over the yard and everything had been ransacked. Our ATV was stolen (goodness knows how) and I'm just feeling really defeated. I see I have messages waiting on me, but I think I need some advil and a drink before I get to it all. :hit

That makes me sick for you! Happened to us when we lived in Mobile years ago. Hope you can find out who did it and recover some of your stuff! :he

Tabasco Jack, you have some very nice hoop runs. I am thinking about going with those for future expansion instead of more of the the chain-link dog kennels like I've been using. Portability, egg collection, and predator protection are all key considerations. Can you offer any suggestions from your experience with them?
I had intended for them to be a temporary fix but I'm going on 3 years with them now. The wheels on the back are the key to moving them. I think dragging them is too rough on the grass and too much work. For winter, I add a piece of 4-6 mil poly under the tarp since the tarps are truly waterproof. Still have to maintain ventilation though. Two summers ago, I kept them in the pasture and they were ok. Last summer with several weeks in the 90's I had to move them under shade trees and leave them.
I use a 2"x6" pressure treated bottom frame, 2" x 2" PT uprights, and 2 50" x 16' cattle panels. It's heavy enough that wind and dogs won't turn it over but still lite enough to move easily. I've got to build another one in the next couple of weeks so I'll take photos and document everything.
And yes, someone else on this thread built a more permanent one last summer. Had an attic floor and real nest boxes. I don't remember who it was though. Maybe someone else remembers and will chime in.

Anyone selling hens that live around 30 minutes from Mableton. I justsold some hens to make room for new ones (and no I did not sell them to someone who is gonna cook them, who would do such a thing) but I can't seem to find anyone who sells mature hens.
