YO GEORGIANS! :)

Another day of coop building here. I swear I'm becoming addicted to it. Anything I see I'm like 'how can I turn that into a coop' lol every weekend at my house has become an episode of 'Extreme Home Makeover: Chicken Coop Edition.'

I was sitting out in the chicken yard today admiring one of my new little BCM and a hawk flew down and jumped on one of three new mommas who was out with their chicks. They all share the chicks, somewhat. I still can't believe it did it when I was out there. Anyway, it was trying to get her and the two others came to her rescue and beat that hawk until it flew off of her. I had also screamed and was running over there but it was those two hens that did it. I have seen this pair of hawks around all summer. The other day one was swooping down and the chickens went crazy and all hid. I feel like it's a matter of time but I hope they stay smart and don't let it get them. I have a lot of trees, bushes, fences, etc. They are just getting bolder. I've had the chickens here for a couple of years and this is the first year I've had a hawk problem. Someone even gave me one of those big owls that I put out there. Now I think that might be part of the problem. The hawk flew right next to it to get to the chicken. I'm more worried about this winter when there's no leaves on things. Do they stay in the winter, too?
I would love to free range, but can't due to the hawks (and coyotes etc) in my area. The other day Hubby and I looked up to see 9....yes we both counted 9 full sized hawks flying a tight circle over my coop. I have built a mini Fort Knox of a coop with buried hardware mesh secured to the same on all surrounding walls, vents, windows and over the entire run top. My 2 GH and 100 pound English Black Lab have sounded the alert and chased off the only 2 hawks that dared to land on the run roof. I hope the best for you and yours, I 'can't imagine seeing that happen right
in front of me.

Th

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been on here all week. I've got a mixed flock, with the majority being Black Copper Marans. I've also got an Ameraucana, an Ameraucana/ BCMs mix, a RIR/Buff Orp mix, an Easter Egger, & some games. How about you?
[/quotThats ok I have not had time to be on here much either. I have so many different breeds, it is hard to list. Lol. I am trying to build up a good flock. I got rid of everything I had last year and started at ground zero this year. I have over 300 chickens all purebred but most are very young and I won't be really ready for selling chicks and eggs until next year. I am trying to sell a few pairs but I have made a few strategic mistakes. Like buying a bunch of banty chicks early in the year. Nobody buys them around here. Lol I learned a lesson.

I can totally relate. I'm waiting for the rain to leave to do more coop building! My husband has already asked if the coop was going to have one bath or 2!

Got two RIRs and two Black Japs today! Neat little birds! Even though they are just chicks, the Black Japs look so funny! Short little legs, with their belly almost touching the ground...lol Attitude to boot! They don't take anything from the bigger BuffOrpington hen!

Ummm, those would not be hawks. Hawks do not fly in groups and they don't circle. The only time you may see two together is a mom with a young or a mate. You are looking at Vultures. Vultures circle in search of something dead. They will not harm your live chickens.
