YO GEORGIANS! :)

I am preparing a giant coop (14' x 20') it is an old metal building I am going to convert.  I would like to raise different breeds for laying, meat, as well as quails.  My question is, can I house them together but separated by wire dividers?  I intend on having 3-4 separated areas inside the coop as well as outside wired in runs that are also separated.  Any advice and or suggestions of breeds?  I live in Middle Georgia in Marshallville.

Hey!

That sounds like a really great plan for your coop. Yes they can be separated by wire and you can get whatever breed you like, because I think that each breed of chicken has its good and bad qualities it just depends on what you like. :) I hope this helped please feel free to ask any more questions.

Good luck!! :)

Just a caution about using metal. It can be extremely hot in the summer and could act like an oven. I have read several articles about using metal. In the winter it is cold. That is why most people use some sort of wood because it is a better insulator and doesn't hold heat or cold like metal does. Would you go sit on a piece of metal that has been sitting out in the sun? No, you would burn your booty! But you would sit on a piece of wood. Same goes in the winter, would you sit on a cold piece of metal? You would probably stick to it like a wet tongue to a frozen flagpole! So, just be really careful if you decide to use the metal. It would have to have lots of ventilation.

I'm wanting to use 2 Bators. One for the first 18 days and then the 2nd for the lockdown period. Can I add eggs to the Bator that I use for 18 days? Or is this to risky?

This is done all the time! That's why most people want 2 bators. They add eggs every week. Either mark the dates on them or keep them in a certain row. Take the ones out for the lockdown bator and add new eggs in the main bator. Make sure you totally clean the lockdown/hatching bator between hatches! You can go to the Incubators Anonymous thread and read a lot about how others do it! I wish I had a second bator so I can do it too! Good luck and post pictures of all the cute little chicks you hatch!

I would suggest a hallway down the middle with pens on either side. Then you can have the runs extend outside so everone gets some dirt and sunlight.
As far as breeds go, you have to think of what you want from your chickens, like eggs, meat, and/or chicks. I picked out breeds that lay different colored eggs so I have a colorful basket, but I also chose breeds/colors that would sell locally, so I can make some money for feed.

I need to re-home 2 Gold-laced roos. They are 2 rowdy little boys (I imagine them making fart jokes, pulling ponytails, and revving their engines when they spin their wheels), but alas they are driving my hens nuts. Good stock.

Lol...sounds like my sons. Are your Roos by chance LF Cochins? If I'm lucky and they are...how old are they, do you have pics, are they from hatchery stock, and where are you located. Sorry for all the questions but if they're LF Cochins I'm VERY interested.

Wyandottes - can't believe I left that part out! I drug home an old dog house the other day so I could separate them from the rest of the flock & restore peace to chickdom. LF? Is that large fowl? I have 3 bantam cochin roos - 1 blue & 2 splash - will also need to go soon. The Wyandottes came from a breeder in west ga. The cochins came from a local hobby "hatchery" so I don't know a thing about them but they are feathering in beautifully. Love those fuzzy butts! I don't have pics yet but I can have my daughter take some tomorrow or Sunday & post them.
