Glad to know I'm not the only one planning big(ger)! I found a breeding pen design on here somewhere that I am wanting to use for inspiration. I will have 4 5x12 pens built together and am hoping to build 4 sets of those. That should get me set with "some" of the breeds I want to raise! If this weather stays nice, I should have one set finished in 2 weeks.
I was hoping for you to have a good day without sickness-maybe it won't last much longer. Hope you found (find) your hen nice and safe.
 
@LTygress: so so sorry you are feeling so crummy. Been there done that. Neti pot or do a saline nasal spray to flush out your sinus'. Unless you wanna make a trip to the doc to fill ya up with toxic meds that may or may not make you better quicker. Hope your leghorn shows up too. Does she often hide her eggs while free ranging??
 
Leghorn is gone. No sign of her. They don't usually HIDE their eggs when free ranging, but they do put them in the barn sometimes which is FULL of junk. But she's not a broody one at all, and isn't roosting on or anywhere near the pen.

I had a funny feeling something was up when I saw a hawk earlier, close enough for me to see he was checking out my chickens as he flew - and even exactly which chicken he was looking at! So I stood out there, widened my stance to look even bigger, and stared at him (sign of aggression/tracking, so he gets scared of ME). He flew away. But obviously not quite empty-handed if he got a meal much earlier.

I'm not too upset over the loss. I have two leghorn offspring that are coming of age very soon. Both are crossed with easter eggers, but that was my whole purpose for having leghorns - to outcross other breeds. The only disadvantage is that egg production will be way down until these other two start laying.

Eww, no, no, and no. I can't really do anything involving nasal sprays or flushes. For some reason, I get vertigo REALLY bad with those things. And a doctor would prescribe Flonase, which is much, much worse.

I'm sticking with lots and lots of liquid consumption (by drinking, not inhaling, lol), blowing my nose regularly, and avoiding any airborne chemicals.

Lol! I *tried* to candle but 58 eggs tetris stacked in that itty bitty bator? Yeah. No. I just did the silkies and the Leghorn and Sumatra eggs. Too early! But, I'm an addict. Ssshhhh! Don't tell anyone.
 
Yeah. Thought I'd go for a small batch....Lmbo! 9 of those are silkies. I got seramas and Leghorns from LTygress, plus some EE, OE, and I don't remember what the brown she gave me is. *shrugs* with this hatch, breed is no biggie. It'll either give me eggs or go to freezer camp.
