Love my Silkies and Polish except my Silver Polish Roo Pepper is one aggressive boy! I have to carry a rake to keep him back. He doesn't even have spurs but he got me so good on my calf I had a welt and huge bruise for a month. I was worried ablot clot might form underneath! He has shaped up somewhat and he's just protecting them
 
Hi! I'm Missy and live in Tyrone - Fayette County, just south of the Atlanta airport. I'm just starting my flock and am concerned about the heat index here. I've done some research on extreme heat tolerant breeds and am very interested in Silkies. I'd like to ask you fellow Georgians about your experiences with how this breed handles the heat and if you can suggest other breeds that do well during our summer swelters. Any and all help is appreciated! :)
 
I am near Columbus about an hour South of you and I am going with plenty of ventilation. And putting the coop in a shady area near the lake. I have hatchery RIRs,EEs, and BRs and will add a trio of HRIRs soon.

There is a website that lists the breeds and all about cold/heat tolerance. It is the Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart
http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html Maybe that will help. I have my coop and run in the shade. I have lots of open sides (with wire) with roosts where they can catch the breeze. They also free range and go into the bushes in the summer. So far, the heat hasn't harmed any of the birds!
