Flovilla here!
Congrats on the baby girl! I'm with your wife, I could never eat any of my chickens, ever. I have all "pretty birds" as you could call them because I won't be eating them. My favorite breeds that I've had are Easter Eggers (Araucanas and Ameraucanas from the feed store), Light Brahmas, Speckled Sussex, and Silver and Gold laced wyandottes. They were all good egg layers and good chickens. I have had light brown leghorns as well, but they were too skittish being that I carry mine all around the yard. The breeds that I will not get again are Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks. I've had 2 barred rocks from two different flocks that weren't nice and 3 RIR from two different flocks. The RIRs from the first flock got named the "red headed stepsisters" because they were so mean. A lot of people in this forum will probably disagree with me on that though. That's just my two cents. How many are you wanting? That will determine the size of your coop unless you just want to build a huge one that you could keep adding to.Probably eggs and pets. My wife informed me the other day, "there is no way I could eat a chicken out of our backyard" Let's just say she was raised in a concrete jungle so I am working to fix that.
You'd be surprised, my 4 chickens talk back when I talk to them, the difference is that I usually don't know what they're saying unless it's in the morning and they need food or water and I haven't been out to check yet. Beware though, they know the hand that feeds themThanks for info on the kid and chickens. I have no doubt that they will be easier...at least they won't directly talk back. So with the hay, is it better to use something else or what?
Well done Robo, you successfully quoted, but where is your reply?![]()
I'll just smile and nod and continue to not have a clue where that is.Flovilla here!

Got 14 SLW chicks. I got them at Wild Horse Tack but they were from MJ's hatchery in Marietta. Very nice looking little birds.
