YO GEORGIANS! :)

we have a threat of tornadoes today?????

Well, there was. Apparently the threat has passed. Whew!
I see a lot of you have Marans. I had never heard of them until recently. What is so great about them?

They lay very dark brown eggs, are very good layers, and they are dual purpose. Also, if you cross a black copper marans with a blue egg layer, Ameraucana or EE, you get olive egger offspring.

put her in a wire bottomed cage with no nest. Just food/water and a roost. If you put her on the ground, she'll most likely just make a hole in the dirt to sit in.
Another trick is tossing her in with a young and/or lonely rooster. He will give her alot of attention ;) , (no nest then either)

Yup, it's called a Broody Breaker, lol

They are also suppose to be very docile. I know we has a blue Marans roo. He was the sweetest roo ever. He was gentle with his girls, and never even turned turned a mean eye to anymore! Would like to get another Marans one day. A pullet with really blackish/brown eggs!

My girls are pretty docile, but my roo was overly aggressive.
(He got ate)

So, I'm pondering the 63 chicks that I currently have and am really wondering - DO I NEED THIS MANY CHICKENS!? Do I really need a bunch of breeding trios, etc? Why? Am I really going to sell eggs and chicks? Maybe I need to just cut back to a good laying flock and maybe two breeding sets plus meat birds? Why am I going through all this trouble for Silver Gray Dorkings? It's not like they are stellar layers or fast growing - I just like the idea of the history of the breed. Is that worth the trouble I'm going through to have them?

I'm in a chicken downer right now.

Let me introduce you to chicken math. YES you will need 63 chicks. Chicken Math will show you the way!

Enabler! LOL

I just went downstairs to switch the laundry over (laundry is in the basement - brooder is in the basement). And I stopped to check on the chicks and was thinking "Well, I already have 12 teeny ones. I may as well run down to TC Country and see what they have..." I'm SICK, I tell ya!
