YO GEORGIANS! :)

Ok veteran egg hatchers, I have been playing with this incubator for 2+ days now and I still get temp swings. The best I can do is 99-102 swing. Is this acceptable? I've added heat sinks, opened and closed air holes, adjusted the thermostat till I'm blue in the face. Anyone have suggestions of something else I should try?

Where is your incubator located within the house? Is it near a window (getting sun at some point), doorway, air/heater vent? Believe me, even the slightest air movement can make a difference. I have my bator in a corner of a shelf and the eggs along the back side of the incubator near the wall always hatch first (like a whole day!) because it stays warmer than the front side that is to the room! Your air holes should be removed after day 10 no matter what. I don't know what heat sinks are. The temp swings are ok as long as you stay in the 99-100.5 range. Lower temps are better than high. Remember, hens get off their nests every now and then to go eat and drink. Those eggs go thru some temp swings, too.

I don't add water to the 'wells' That is just too much humidity. I have a small rectangular baby food container with a rectangle cut in the plastic lid that I put water in. I add it to the side of the bator between the turner and the wall. Fits just right. I can put a piece of tape over the hole to adjust the humidity as needed. Some people have natural humidity and don't need to add water, but I have a dry house, I guess, and need to add a little to keep it around 30-40%

Good luck with your bator! It is soooooo wonderful to hatch chicks! Love them!

Its in my closet so there should be no drafts aside from the 50 times a day I swing that door open to check lol. Heat sinks are just bottles of water in the bottom, supposed to help with temp swings. We are using a 40watt bulb. I may try new thermometer as it gets to 100, light shuts off, in it goes up to 102 immediately. When thermometer reaches 99 light comes back on and thermometer changes automatically to 97.

Also, I have isolated my suspected egg eater in another coop, so we will see how it goes. Carcar I think you are right about it being the slw girl.

Our TSC got their chicks from Mt. Healthy and so did the one in Athens. I actually talked to someone at the hatchery. If you look up Speckled Sussex on their site the picture of the adult birds is what our chicks are starting to look like. My roo that is now crowing at 7 weeks old, feather coloring looks just like the roo in the picture. I figure his comb and waddles as well as tail feathers will keep growing to look similar to the rooster in the picture. :D

I think I remember reading somewhere that with Speckled Sussex, the "speckles" increase with each molt. I think he's just too young to look like the breed photos yet.

My day is ending and not much was accomplished. Bit cold so the littlest ones only got about an hour outside in the rabbit hutch even with a bulb lite. My two biggest ones got new greens and food dish and I found a pigeon nest set so I figured whats good for them would work for chickens. Since I think I have one of each I only bought one nest. We lost our zebra finch and our guest parakeets have a baby in the box so their mommy is going to be surprised when they get back this week. And after reading about combs on the posts today I looked and all 5 of my little babies have one row. Will note the two big ones tomorrow or check pics. Still have little idea what I have maybe a buff orphington on my older two but no idea what the grey (possible roo) is. Same goes for my other 5. How old should they get before I should be able to tell breeds better? Well im calling it a day hope tomorrow is warmer, cleaning pens tomorrow. Stay safe all.
