YO GEORGIANS! :)

My sister was just SO happy with herself for successfully herding and penning up all 10 water fowl (ducks/geese) in less than 10 seconds. She's more familiar with the pains of trying to herd and pen chickens, so the ease of getting ducks and geese in there was worth celebrating.

It's pesticide. Literally. Carbaryl is the name of the active ingredient, which actually does the killing of the insects.

And the name is actually Sevin dust. It's a brand name.
Ohhhh, that makes sense. What is the stuff actually advertised for? Is it supposed to be used on animals or is that just a thing we started doing? Sorry for all the questions I'm just curious! Haha

It used to be advertised for both. But then recently, it has only been advertised for use in gardens, on fruit and veggie plants. I'm not sure what the issue was with it being used on animals. But the benefits FAR outweigh the possible side effects. You can either have a sneezing chicken, or one that mites ate away until it died.

Guys we just got a few hens from a commercial chicken house down the road. Apparently these are ones they couldn't catch and put back up or something. I went out and looked at them today and one of the girls has HUGE bulbs of flesh on her feet and I have NO clue what it is all about. She's having trouble walking and seems like that leg may be weak because of its disuse. Anyone know what I could do to help the poor girl? Shes a sweet hen and I don't want to have to put the poor thing down if I don't have to.

It is probably bumblefoot. It is caused by her living in a cage with a wire floor. It is a bacterial infection. You can lance any areas that have pus in them and use an antiseptic on her feet. She may need antibiotics. These chickens have never walked in grass or been free. I'm glad you have her.

Well! I finally have a broody. One of my original game hens (who is well over a year old now) has decided she's ready to hatch eggs. Go figure.

At first I was frustrated with her, but my attempts at forcing her out of the nest didn't work. **I've never seen a hen so puffed up before. I swear she hissed at me.

I grabbed 2 fresh game eggs and snuck them under her real quick, and she took her wings to tuck them under her. She's sleeping in there tonight.

I've already got all the chicks I want, but I would love to experiment with the real thing!

So, I'll let her hatch these, and once they hatch I'll just put her and the babies in a separate pen.

Now I'm kinda excited.
