YO GEORGIANS! :)

But just know traps are readily available at local stores so you don't have to wait on shipping. Oh and cracklin makes a great bait for foxes.
@mrsdszoo came over recently and showed my sister, nephews, and kinda me, how to process chickens for meat. We took all of those entrails and put them around the trap. That's what finally attracted something.

Well that will certainly work but you are not going to gut a chicken every time you want to bait a trap and you need to keep the bait fresh. We used cracklin when I was younger and we were trapping regularly. But again, you should find good tips on the aforementioned web sites. With GON.com you can search articles from the magazine or go to the trapping forum.

I learned something important this morning:

Never trust your brother or brother-in-law, who have never used a spring trap before, to tell you how to secure it.

We went with an 8-inch-long, 3/4-inch wide "nail" and staked it to the ground. The area there is soft from forest mulch decaying over the years, with red clay below that. I figured maybe they were right - if we got low enough with the stake and hit the red clay.

Nope!
That trap sure as hell caught something this morning. And whatever it caught, disappeared with the entire trap, chain, stake, and all! There is no evidence of any of it left! So now there is some fox, coyote, possum, raccoon, SOMETHING running around with MY TRAP stuck to it's **** leg! And I doubt it would keep the stupid animal from coming back after chickens anyway, so I guess that was pointless.
What about using a concrete block or 2? Well I guess a coyote could haul that off though, hmm...

True.

But if I catch a fox, you can bet I'll gut THAT THING to bait the trap next time! He should give me some nice meaty bits, too...

That's what I was thinking. But apparently no one had a chain to attach it to the concrete blocks.

At least if it drags the concrete blocks off, it would leave distinct drag marks to follow it "home".

I am getting excited! Only three more weeks before I start gathering duck eggs to hatch! Then another week after that and I will be looking for chicken eggs to add to the bator with them! Hope there will be some good ones available at that time! I guess it is pointless to look at eggs on ebay/craigslist now. It is killing me! WANT THEM NOW! hahhaha... ok, I admit it.....I am addicted!

Still haven't figured out if my young hen is an egg eater or not. No real change in the amount of eggs I am getting. Only 10 today. Only one brown egg out of 7 brown egg laying hens! No white eggs out of 2 white egg laying hens. It's just so frustrating not to be getting eggs.....and most of these hens are less than a year old!

My hens slowed down the last couple of weeks but then yesterday I got one from all 20 of 21 layers. I think I had a squirrel eating the eggs. At first I thought one of my birds but then realized there is no way. I started going out there when I could about every hour and started getting more eggs for a few days. But then only 7-10 eggs for a week. So I am thinking it was a couple of things. They were all just laying every other day and also the squirrel was taking some of them. I realized it was a squirrel when kept finding eggs in odd places like I haven't seen before now plus the egg remains didn't resemble something a chicken would do. My husband and I are still trying to decide what to do about the squirrel. For now it seems to have stopped. As far as laying patterns we have had some darker overcast days lately. Light always seems to be a factor in how often they lay. Do you think your weather has something to do with it?
