YO GEORGIANS! :)

Question:  Everything on the internet I have looked at shows growing the fodder indoors.  Does it have to be done indoors?

Not during the summer, it really needs to be between 60-80degrees so indoors is normally perfect. Mine tends to be messy due to the shelves I'm using so my DH won't let me sprout indoors. I have seen where some people put some plastic sheeting around a shelf and rope lights under their trays for warmth during the winter. My DH let me build a small(5x10) greenhouse for mine(also let's me continue my aquaponic tomato project with some slight modifications).

Quick! How many of you open your incubator during hatching to help chicks? Does it really mess up the rest of the eggs hatching?? I would just like to quickly grab an egg and poke a hole thru the
white membrane on one that seems too thick for the chick! I don't want it to suffocate!

Ive been known to open my incubator to extract dry chicks. And ive also found chicks that are helped from there shell have a 90-100% death rate.

Hey everbody; Long time no chat! I took a longish hiatus fom the forums because life got all sorts of busy and complicated, but I missed y'all :). I bet there are plenty of new folks, so "HI" to them, and what's new with everybody? I see Robo is experiencing the joy that comes with not having to haul water for chickens* all over creation -yay! :clap

*Although not as difficult as hauling water for elephants, as you know if you've seen the movie

I would wait if I were you; very rarely does an assisted chick survive. Poking a hole inthe membrane could make things dry out faster, and shrink wrap the chick who might just be waiting for the rest of its yolk to absorb. Hatching is a long process, especially for observers! " A watched chick never hatches" -or something like that...

Hey Rocky Rhode! First chick out was the CCLegbar! May be a boy, though. Chick is dark from being wet, but looks like a big spot on its head.....boy? 6 more piping right now!

That's great!! I hope you get some pullets!! If those CCL's have a dark chipmunk stripe they are pullets, yellow spot on their heads then they are boys. Keep us posted and post a pic when they are dry.

I posted this in the goose forum but I thought I'd put it here too. Sort of like a public service announcement since I wasn't warned..... consider yourself warned if you ever get geeseses.

Apparently I need to supplement mine with something, I'm just not sure what. Why didn't anyone warn me that Pilgrim Geese are worse than goats? I would never have dreamed that while I kept a close eye on the goats and put them in their pens when no one was around that it was actually the flippin geese that would be the culprits. Those dang things chew on EVERYTHING!!! Then ate the wiring underneath my camper. Not just chewed it up a little, ATE IT! We found pieces on the ground and now I will have to rewire that part. I have caught them chewing on the anything that dangles, hangs, or just looks interesting. Boat trailer wires, galvanized trash can handles, plastic garbage bags, cardboard boxes... the list goes on. And today they actually surrounded our John Deere Gator and all 8 of them were chewing on various parts. Also today I had to chase one down to get a piece of duct tape away from him. I though it was just stuck to his bill but OH NO!!!, genius had swallowed about 4 inches of it. I pulled it back up out of his throat when I got a hold of the part sticking out. I don't even know where he got it. As far as I know there's nothing duct taped inside the fence. Thank God they don't have teeth or they'd chew their way through the fence and escape! LOL! Gotta love them, though.
