YO GEORGIANS! :)

Rub it in, Robo.. Only thing worse would be if you texted pics of all those e- oh. Wait...
Ditto.

I bragged on another post that my pullets laid all thru the fall and winter last year --born spring 2013. Guess the bragging bit me!. I am getting 1-2 eggs/day out of 5 laying and one recent broody. Guess I need to collect feathers and make pillows?

So this is what it looks like now. Temp/humidity is low because I attached styrofoam to the back of the fan and for now taped the fan against the back. If this works, then I'll hot glue it to the back wall. Is the fan location ok? Or should it be moved?
Sorry just now seeing your post. How is it doing now?
I've been outside wasting my time working on a temp coop for the crazy free range chickens the neighbor left behind. I was hoping they would go in the coop instead of the trees but no...they went in the coop and right back out and into the trees.

Oh well I tried.

Oh my GODDD, WHEN does this freaking MOLT end!?!? I'm getting a max of one egg a day out of six definite laying hens and one Marans who is FAR past POL but has never laid to my knowledge. And that one egg I do get (usually from black star) has a paper-thin shell.

I am so SICK of this! Pay rent already!! I'm giving extra calcium as much as I can and letting them free range. Does this mean I'll be buying eggs this winter!? Or will they start back? Please tell your experience, I've never been through a molt before and I'm fed up. LOL!

TheGeekysheep probably hit the nail on the head. Chickens need at least 14 hours of light to lay eggs. If you want eggs thru the winter, put a light on a timer in your coop. I set my timer to come on from 4am to 8 am. My girls have started back laying again.

in the ones I have built the fan does best blowing across the light bulb.a water heater thermostat will help u they are very easy to wire up_hot wire goes straight to the bulb the neg wire will go to the thermostat and then to the bulb. If u can drill a few holes in the thermostat for a more stable temp.

So I did buy a thermostat and will install it later this evening when I get home. My temp and humidity seemed to stabilize this afternoon after I made some adjustments. Here is how it looks now.

@jdduckDrill holes in the thermostat?

We have done something radical.... We have turned out ALL of our hens. No more penned up, they are all free ranging right now.

The pen is now home to the walking dead. All of the roosters we are going to process are in there. About 20 or so. Too bad for some of them.. They're really nice looking birds. I keep telling GAM she needs to invite someone over who knows how to process birds and share them in return for the help. We don't need 20 or 25 chickens in the freezer at one time and we have GOT to thin the herd. She's probably going to process 10 or so ducks also. And if I don't keep a close eye on her, she's going to end up taking one of my Pilgrims and then she won't need anyone else's help.... she'll need to move in with one of y'all.

Sunflour- glad to hear it's not just me!!

Flowerbh- I hear ya, I really don't want to use a light though as there's no convenient way to do so having to be at work so early.. BUT I may reconsider. We'll see. I jut do NOT remember having this issue last fall! Oh. You know what!! That may be bc last fall was when my flock was raided and I was rebuilding. Tht makes me feel a bit better...

Robo/GAM- I flaked last time I know, but I'd be glad to come help process. Last time I had totally forgotten my Dr appt, so that screwed things up.

Took my dogs out at 6:30 and something was lying in the front yard- my big dog walked over and sniffed it and it hobbled off slowly, like maybe a 'possum would do.. Got worried it was something sick so came in for a light.

It was one of my off-colored cockerels that I've had penned separately for processing. He's pretty beat up. Walked out to the pen (this one is very makeshift so that's why my "less valuables" were there).. Couldn't locate the second cockerel. So once it's daylight well go out and cull the injured one an try to find the second. Maybe he made it. :( It had to have happened while we were out for the evening- if it were overnight the dogs would have woke us up.

Anyway it sucks but I'm just thankful it was culls and not my layers or breeders!!

About a light.. It can just be a regular bulb right? Doesn't have to be heat lamp? I'm not comfy leaving that much heat all day but I think I could rig up a normal bulb above the laying boxes and plug it in as I leave of a morning.. Would that work?
