So I did buy a thermostat and will install it later this evening when I get home. My temp and humidity seemed to stabilize this afternoon after I made some adjustments. Here is how it looks now.

Valley...the chickens won't freeze. Chickens are well insulated. We'll have all kinds of chickens sleeping in trees tonight.

Even the rope type that are encased in thick plastic! Even though you wouldn't hang within reach. It'd still be an extra insurance from breaking the glass if it were to fall.

We used an 18' one to make a warming tray for starting seeds last winter…it gets quite warm. I think It hit near 100 F about 1/2 inch away from the rope light and seedling soil was 80 F in my garage with ambient temps 35- 40F. But it was a commercial grade one from Home Depot.

Alright so the little guys and girls were huddled up tight in front of the heat lamp today. Temperature in the higher parts of the coop was 40-45* this morning and down near the light was 70-75*. Now for what we look to be facing with this years Georgia winter do i need to look into hanging tarp's and/or plastic over the vent openings or will it be best to just leave the heat lamp in the coop till all of the birds are fully feathered? I've got birds ranging from 3 weeks to 7 weeks and the breeds are silkie mix, show girls, turkens, brahma, welsummer, marans, and sizzle. They seem to be doing fine with just the lamp but i don't want to risk it with them being so young.

@CliffB My opinion.. For winter I would cover the large opening on front and leave the top vents open. You don't want to seal off completely because that will raise humidity and humidity + freeze = frostbite.

As for the heat lamp, I would use it until they are fully feathered and then toss it.

**I would NOT seal off the big opening until the heat lamp is gone. That would be blazing hot probably. If you want to seal thn maybe switch to a lower wattage?

How old are they now? (I could've asked tht fort and saved some typing)

The opening you see is a 1/4-3/8" lexan window. The only open air is the top of the back wall and the tops of the two side walls.

We had winds of 20 mph with gusts of 35 mph today…No snow. But went to grocery and overheard a woman on her cell telling someone there was snow in Macon last nite…..duh, I'm in Macon and there was no snow or I missed it…..was only a low of 45! Snow Oct 31st, wow.

I had birds blowing across my pasture today. They were wondering around doing their free-range thing when a big gust came up and off they tumbled across the pasture.

Guys! The second cockerel showed back up tonight, so I guess nothing snatched him after all. Hubby says maybe they squeezed through te gap and got injured that way (like, something DID get in and they squeezed under the wire to get away- which is in no way chicken behavior so erase this part altogether lol)..? I have no idea but it was too dark to check the second for injuries.

My issue now.. I guess I just cull them? I mean, if they are bitten by something I certainly don't want to eat them.. And no way to know for certain whether they were bitten or cut- not something I want to guess at.

But nobody needs two injured Roos no good for eating.. Er I don't anyway...
