Worried about my chickens and chicks in the cold snap coming our way. My two broody mama's are in a corner of the big coop on straw with the 10 5 day old chicks. Several people are saying that heat lamps are dangerous and should not be used near chickens. I haven't hooked our heat lamp up yet but should I or should I just trust that the mamas will keep the chicks warm. It is supposed to be 17 here Thursday night with a 3 degree wind chill. The coop is the only place I have to keep them all. What would y'all do?
 
I think heat lamps are an issue if the chickens can get to them in any way. They might try to roost on them or something. But you will definitely have to put them somewhere sheltered from the wind. I can't speak for the motherliness of your hen so she might or might not take good care of them.

The coop is divided by fencing inside between the storage area for feed and supplies and the actual area that has the roost, nests and feeders so the chickens can't get to the heat lamp where I was going to hang it. The two mamas are together with the chicks and so far have been sharing the raising of the chicks and huddle together to keep the chicks under them. I have insulated the walls around the mamas and chicks and there are no drafts. I'm hoping they will continue to keep them warm. I just don't know if I should add heat with heat lamp or not.
 
>>>>Personally<<<<<..... If my hens were taking care of them, I would forego the heat lamp. Birds produce a lot of heat and their feathers are very good insulators. Their feet and combs stand the best chance of damage from the cold if left outside, but in from the elements I think they'd be ok.
