Speaking of needing hatching eggs ... I'm going to need a ton of them in about 1 1/2 weeks. I have hatching projects starting in a total 4 classes at 3 schools. One of them is ducks.

Guess it is about time to get the incubators dusted off and checked ... have to get my teaching materials and posters ready ... schedules. Oh my, the schedules.

Lots of work but lots of fun, too.

Ok, here are some photos!

All thirty of them

My three NNs. The blue and the black are from my green egg layer, non-frizzled Naked Neck, Toupe
The little white and black one is from my Frizzled blue egg layer Naked Neck, Electra!

Love the two little black spots on her back.

Cutest chick ever! And Cliff, I think it's a girl! (Of course, if you don't like the color, we can try again!)

Now, we have to see if it is a frizzle! If it isn't, I am going to keep her! I have some more eggs in a friends incubator. They go into lockdown on Saturday. Hoping for more NNs! And, no, they are not ugly......they are adorably ugly! Love them!

Does anyone have suggestions on candling Marans eggs? My friend unsuccessfully tried to hatch a batch of Marans eggs, but they were so dark, we couldn't candle them. I think next we will try a lighter shelled egg to get some experience. We are new at hatching!

Yes, Marans eggs are known to be a little harder to hatch. One of the reasons is that the Marans egg has a white shelled egg base with a HUGE amount of brown coating on it. The coating is so thick (that's why the egg is so dark), that when it dries, it is super thick. Kind-of like something that has been painted over and over and over again....it becomes thicker with the paint. Anyway, just think of the poor chick trying to pip through that thick coating. There is a lot of controversy about lightly sanding the egg shell near where the air sac should be at lockdown. You could read about it on google and make your own decision.

For newbies, I think I would go with an easier egg to hatch until you get some experience. Good Luck!

Funny you should say that flower. I wouldn't hard-boil a maran egg either because they were too hard to shell. hahaha
