Really?!?! That's great! I guess I will putting some in the bator for our Easter Family Get together hatch! The kids love the baby ducks, too!
 
Gosh, my daughter lives in a big subdivision on a golf course here in FL. They have a one acre lake in the back yard. So every time I look out there are different animals, birds there! Yesterday, about 18 full grown turkeys were grazing in her backyard. Today there are about 7 different big white longlegged birds (egrets, storks, etc) along with some big black birds wading in the lake. She says they have deer and other critters, too, but I haven't seen them yet. Shot, they see more wildlife than I do living in the mountains! Mainly because we rent the house and the renters are too loud and are all over scaring everything away!
 
I hope everyone is thawing today! You know it's bad when we are below freezing in Savannah! Our girls were fine, but I did lose a waterer (totally my fault). We have two waterers for our flock of 10. I pulled one out of the run and put it in our garage last night. I left the other one out, knowing it would freeze, but in the past, it freezes and thaws with no problems. Not last night. It exploded. I found pieces of it around the coop. Oops....
 
So I am excited to say I convinced my husband to let me add 3 more hens instead of one. So I picked out another Brahma, a Buff Orpington, and a Dominique. All hens. I am shocked though the Buff was beat up and is missing feathers on her back. Do you think she was being picked on by other hens or could it have been a roo?

I grew up in Alaska and I have to say I love going to the beach! Please let it warm up. I hate it when the water freezes here in the deep south.

Oh, I just visited Alaska in July. Beautiful place! Yea, like Robo said, if the feathers are from both sides of the hens back, it is where the rooster 'grabs hold' and the feathers are broken and torn.. Usually happens when there are not enough hens per rooster. hahhaha.....my hens don't show any wear and tear since I currently only have one active rooster to 25 hens! I know that soon my other two roosters will be getting their hormones! You can actually buy saddles for your hens that will protect her feathers.

Where did you end up finding them? I know you were looking around. I have Buff Orpington...she is one of my favorites. And our Dominique is one of our best layers.
 
I got her from a lady in Statesboro who wanted to thin her flock out. I met her a car dealership so I did not get to see her set up and that she was missing feathers. I paid 5 bucks per hen which is amazingly low since they are only a year or two old and I have already got 3 eggs out of them and none from my original 3 since early January.

Well since I do not have a rooster her feathers should come back with no problem. I just feel for her because its so cold. I even have a heat lamp on them at night and during the day if they get cold.
