YO GEORGIANS! :)

@flowerbh remember that little mystery chick you gave me with the OE and CCL? This is her now! She's turned out really cool looking. She has a head poof that makes her look perpetually furious, and really well feathered legs! Very pretty gold and black coloration too.

I love her! I have quite a few with crests. One of my roosters is a crested Swedish Flower. But, the other rooster, Beau is the one with the heavy feathered legs. So, maybe this is one from one of my crested hens (Legbar, Swedish Flower, or Polish) Most likely the Legbar X Beau (Brahma) because I think at that time, I was only hatching my colored eggs. Does the gold neck coloring go all over or just at the neck? Can't wait to see what color egg she lays!

All over! Her back and shoulders are very gold, with beautiful double black "lacing" on each feather. She's more black towards the tail and underneath. I'll have to try to get a better picture with her whole body in it. I'm excited to see what color eggs she lays, too!

Now I am wondering if the Swedish Flower is her mom and Beau the dad. That would also give her a crest and feathered legs. But, if that is the case, only beigey/brown eggs. But, what a beautiful chicken! This is an ancient photo of one of the Swedish Flower hens.

This is the legbar with the Brahma. So my guess is that Beau is the dad and either one of these hens.

In my PERSONAL Marans experience, I'm gonna say pullet. All the boys I've had have been super red by eight weeks and had wattles coming in. The girls, though always manly-looking, just aren't as quick.

But, only having one Marans (I assume?), it's hard when you don't have others of the same breed/lineage to compare..

Yes. This is the only Marans. But the EE roo, James Bond, was REALLY red in the comb 2 weeks ago and the other EE I know for sure is a pullet because a vet stuck her finger up her poor little chicken butt to check the lump that was in her abdomen. Since it was on her uterus, I'd say that's pretty obvious! LOL I was wondering if it was a Marans trait that their tails are so fancy whether boy or girl. The comb is only slightly pink in comparison to James, and not much different from Honey, the other pullet. This one is by far the prettiest chicken we've had. Except for Stanley. He's still my favorite.

She really is cool looking! He little head puff looks like a fascinator hat. Like she's on her way to a royal wedding!

Well, like I said it's hard to compare one line to another.. But aside from that funny tail I would never think roo.. Just me though. :)

Flower is way better at spotting the saddle and hackle stuff though..

Witnessed a scene yesterday involving my baby ducks. The babies were hatched by the broody duck two weeks ago. They walk around the chicken yard with about 34 chickens and 6 grown ducks. Nobody bothers them.....until yesterday. For some reason, the drake (daddy of the baby ducks) picked up one of the ducks by the neck and started shaking it. The mom ran over, threw herself against the drake. He dropped the baby and then mom totally leaned over the baby and protected it from the drake until the drake walked away! So sweet to see her protection. Not sure why the drake did that. Never saw him do anything like that before except when he was keeping the peace between to squabbling hens once. Maybe the baby did something wrong? I don't know enough about duck behavior yet. I hope it's not like the baby is a boy and the dad doesn't want competition. Do they do that?

I'm glad the baby is okay and the mother protected it. I'm sure it was shocking to witness.

I'm clueless in regards to duck behavior, but please keep us posted. I'm quite interested in what would cause this to occur.

why oh why oh WHY do I let myself go read in other forums when I KNOW I'm going to wind up aggravated with some people!

although it is funny to see someone respond to a post that's a couple of years old
