YO GEORGIANS! :)

We leave Friday afternoon. Back Sunday afternoon. The big kids out in the coop are probably fine. The littles that are waiting to be big enough for integration may need a little more attention. Since they like to dirty up the waterer/feeder & knock them over. I sitll have them inside. Honey is probably big enough to start meet & greets but she's 2 weeks older than DOmino and James, and twice as big. LOL

We've pretty much figured out that we'll have to board the dogs because they're too high maintenance (aka a special kind of PITA). Lucille is probably fine for a couple of nights too. All she needs is plenty of hay and I could leave extra pellets in her bowl. She's easy.
board the chicks too!!

I cup seems to be running over with Roosters. Chicks: 1 from TSC swap, 3 from the store (as now that the silkie has come out of the closet since the other 2 have have been removed), 1 Mottled Cochen I hatched and one I bought with 4 girls. All extra guys except for the Mottled Cochins. Oh and the Barred Cochin A.K.A. heWASashe (or my DH's name of Sumo Joe) seems to be a fascination for my male GS. He quietly follows him around like what the heck is this beach ball that moves on it's own with the odd sniff and huhhhh no does not smell like a beach ball look. (our gentle giant unless someone comes on property uninvited or he thinks I need his protection)

Its a sad day here, something attacked my birds through the fence, and killed 2 guineas, a grey boy and the blue girl

so what would just eat the head? raccoon? since it couldn't pull the whole bird through the fence. I'm on predator duty tonight I will sit up all night because I know it will be back but I have a 17 with its name on it. Oh and had to stitch up anothers neck and he is now in the hospital ward recovering he will stay there a few days to watch for infection

Oh, just want to write this out for myself. I have 34 hens. Some are over 3 years old now. My chickens all started out as pets (that provide me with breakfast!) The chickens became my favorite hobby and provides entertainment. The chickens provide our renters with eggs and entertainment also. But, they didn't 'pay' for themselves until this year when I had enough eggs to start selling at farmers market. Then, my chickens also became a mini business. Well, so now my dilemma. My older chickens are only laying one egg every 7 - 10 days. I also have one young silkie who hasn't laid an egg in months. Should I keep them as the pets they are (and keep feeding them, which isn't a good business move) or should I sell them and just keep growing out new ones? Ugh, I would feel really guilty to sell my pets just because they are getting old. I certainly wouldn't do that to any cat or dog (or husband!)! I have a dog that is almost 16 and has some issues, but it never crosses my mind to get rid of him.....sweet little Irwin! But what about chickens? Who would buy a hen over 3 years old? Yeah, someone who would eat them, I'm sure. And, can I do that to my 'pets?" Does anyone know anyone who has a huge farm that wouldn't mind more chickens even if they are older? I know if I take them to auction, there are no questions asked. I could get $10 - 20 each for them. May do that if I decide to sell off the older ones. It's just that I can't keep adding new chickens forever and feed them all if they aren't laying eggs to help pay for themselves! Ugh, I feel like a traitor! What do you guys do?
How many are not paying rent ? How much will it cost you to keep them it seem like they are grandfathered in on as being pets .Maybe you can keep them until you wrap your mind around it as not a good business move to keep them I think any business person would agree on that , you just need to come to terms with it first . But if it were only a couple of hens I would keep them as pets that's what they started as so thats how I would end it .

So sorry about your guineas! That is sad! I know you especially loved that blue girl!

Raccoons are known to just eat the heads. That's why I only have hardware cloth on the coop. Nothing can reach in while the chickens are in their sleep daze and pull their heads thru. All my chickens and duck are locked up in the main coop every night. I have known too many friends who just use chicken wire and have lost tons of birds that way.
