YO GEORGIANS! :)

I so need an incubator!!!!

Once my babies grow, I will have lavender orps, speckled sussex, Swedish Flowers, and now Ameraucanas and Buff Orps to raise :)
Hmmm, so I need one large pen and at least a couple small runs for individual breeds when I want hatching eggs.
We have the posts and wire for the large pen, along with the metal side of a 4' above ground pool.
We will take the pool metal and cut in half, leaving 2 strips a bit over 2' tall.   Those will be buried some, then make the bottom part of the pen.
The fence will go above that, making the pen 6' high.

the my smaller pen, made from a bunch of dog panels will be available for one breed, or more than likely my grow out pen.

Plans....   Now to just get them together.    I was hoping we would get the pen started on Sunday, but the weather isn't helping with that!

This is a good time to buy incubators. Lot of sales going on.

yeah I really need to build another smaller grow out pen. I have my run divided but I'm now thinking I'd rather have a separate grow out pen, and another coop and run to keep the pure breds in. I'm sure I'll get another rooster or 4

to leave in with the easter eggers I'll wind up with from this hatch.

Seems that since I've moved mama and her hatched eggs into the brooder section of the coop, my leghorn, who was laying her egg on top of broody every day, no longer remembers she's supposed to lay in the nest. She's been laying in the floor close to the brooder, I guess she thinks ms broody is going to reach out and get it and pull it in under her. sometimes these creatures sure make ya laugh

Wow, really slow today! Where is everyone?

Can I just tell you how stumped I am? So I have 38 chickens. Two are boys, about 10 are too young for laying. I have lots of molting hens and a few who just got off being broody. So, today I got 2 eggs! Really?! I am not sure if I have an egg eater. I have never seen any actually eating an egg, but I do know one of the roosters cruises by the nests and goes in and digs around! I also thought one of the POL hens has been lurking around in the nests. I thought maybe she was going to leave me eggs, but nothing! I have put two plastic eggs in the nests and often find them not only on the coop floor, but outside in the run! I saw 3 hens sitting on nests today (other than the two I got eggs from) and would check under them often, only to get no eggs. I can't decide if they laid eggs and then the eggs gotten eaten right away, or they were just resting in the nest boxes and never actually laid an egg! So frustrating. I know that we are not getting the required 14 hours of daylight for laying right now, so maybe they just aren't laying.....or maybe they are and someone is eating them! Ugh!

I made curtains for the nest boxes as it is suppose to help deter egg eaters. (Out of sight, out of mind is what they say). I am thinking I am going to fill the nest up with tons of plastic eggs and let whatever chicken it is that digs them out get frustrated that they are all fake. Maybe they will get tired of it and leave them all alone. Ha! If I use silly colored plastic eggs, then I would easily recognize any that are real, right? Any suggestions?

Oh, I thought up a great new invention if anyone wants to develop it.... a plastic egg that will leave a stain on the egg eaters beak when they try to break it! Brilliant, right?

I thought I had an egg eater, but my eggs disappeared totally. No yolk or shells left at all.
I added golf balls to each nest, and added cat food to their diet.
Now I'm back to getting 4 or 5 a day from my older hens, half are still molting. My 14 POL RIR are looking close, but no eggs from them yet.

We do have a light in the coop, but this pen is mostly in shade. New pen will be out in the open next to my barn.

Oh, I tried blowing out an egg, then filling with mustard, but someone ate the mustard. But it was nowhere near neat.

someone had asked me about chicks and water nipples some time back, posting this up to answer the question:

in that first short clip, the gallon water jug was in there, I have since taken it out. Mama is way worse about scratching stuff into it then the chicks are! so for now, it's two 20oz sprite bottles with nipples in the caps
