YO GEORGIANS! :)

Really? I've read that it's ok to hold a healthy chicken upside down for a bit. I've done that with at least 5 roosters constantly checking to see if they were ok and not seeing them having any problem what so ever. I don't keep them that way but a minute or two. Guess I will have to stop doing that then. No idea what to do with the ones that want to attack then. Sticks and other objects do not work. My husband has used sticks and things to keep them from him and they still go after him. I like to let them know from the start who is the biggest chicken in the yard!

Edit: Wait that didn't sound right! Ok, let them know who is the boss. Yeah that's better.
lol,

That is why I hold my birds and humiliate the feisty roos in front of his girls. Every time I go out I seek him out and pick him up, they soon learn to run, course I just corner him yeah revenge.

Well no more scratching and raking of the food. Just made a new feeder and so far it seems to be working. Will keep a check to make sure they all use it and get feed. But so far so good and it holds plenty of feed.

Yesterday I had a new pullet egg from one of my Polish mixes. It was a light brown. Today, I had two new pullets to lay. What was cute was that these two pullets are inseparable. They go and do everything together! And they both laid their first eggs yesterday! Carcar, one of them was Layla, the beautiful Brahma I got from you. She is the biggest hen out there! (Of course, it's because she is a Brahma!) They are such gentle birds! Beau, our huge Brahma rooster, is so great! But, it's a good thing that the pullets started laying because nobody else is!

Feeling sad. :(

It has been a LONG week here, very little computer play time.

I've been loving my chicks from PapaChaz, but today one of my little splash Ameraucanas is not doing well.
Just sitting, not eating or drinking. The others are making happy chickie noises.
I gave her a drop of Poultry Nutradrench, which is a vitamin mineral suplement. I've used Nutra Drench before of the goat variety.
It would get a little goat who looked about dead up and running.
No luck with the little splash though.
I put it on her tongue, she swallowed, but then started gasping. Now she is over on her side.

edit: Lost her. :(

ok, the 'don't kick him it just makes him more mad'.....well, I just absolutely disagree. The urge to attack is built in, it's to show dominance, that old 'the strongest survive' thing. I kick mine. The first time he did it, I just kind of pushed him away with my foot. He didn't bother me again for a few weeks, but then still does occasionally. I do my best to kick him now, I bounced him off the side of the run the other day, and he got up and came for more, so I gave him more. It's a 'I'm bigger and badder than you' that he will eventually understand, though it is kind of funny that as long as I keep eye contact he won't try anything, he waits until i turn to walk away. So I try to keep an eye on him and if I catch him trying to sneak up on me I jump at him. Goofy thing now waits until I get outside then runs to the fence and jumps at me

Hey, it's all good. If kicking him works for you, then keep kicking him. Not kicking seems to work for me, for now. That's not to say I haven't. Twice I did and he came at me harder. When I don't, he's suddenly a quitter so I just shut it down by not giving him the opportunity to make me engage on his terms. I'm sure that may change in the future. It was a sound philosphy during my single lady days, and a rooster is just another dude, really. I know that roosters are hardwired to fight, but I have to say, if I was hardwired to fight and always win & somebody kicked me, I'd just want to tear their face off or go completely psycho hose-beast on them.

We'll see what happens when James hits puberty. Perhaps he'll be the one needing to be kicked or re-homed. I only say don't because that's what I read about in the blogs/forums/articles I was researching in. I meant it more as a suggestion, not so much as a command. If it were any other roo, I probably wouldn't waste my time with it, but you know this little guy slept under my chin for a week when he was a sick baby. I just don't have the heart, whether he deserves it or not so I decided to find a way to make it work so he can stay. Time will tell.

"To each, his own" is the lesson here. I just wish I could remember which articles and blogs I read because I didn't bookmark them. I think one was in Mother Earth News or Grit, maybe(?). They discussed all angles, including re-homing and freezer camp, so I just chose what works for me and discarded the rest. Please know, I am definitely not trying to be a know-it-all here. I know how much you hate that!

On another note, did you ever find out what those baby birds were that are roosting on my porch every year? I can't wait for the leaves to fall off the trees so Ican get a better look at the goings on in that nest up there.

So sorry for Rose. There is much to learn about keeping chickens and how to take care of their ails. Ohhh..........for a completely happy, healthy flock.

Rose will be fine. I have her out there with her flock mates, she's just got her hen saddle on and she's in a crate so she's protected from the others while I wait for the bruising to heal. She was pecked pretty good I guess. She's all black and blue.

Need to get rid of chickens FAST. Long, long story short; I'm moving, and have realized that I can only take around half of my birds. THAT MEANS THE REST HAVE TO GO BEFORE FRIDAY.
Selling them super cheap! I have:
two ameraucana hens, and easter egger hen, and easter egger rooster, a cochin rooster, an ameraucana rooster, and a barred easter egger rooster that have to go ASAP. ages range from 7 weeks to 3 1/2 years. AM hens lay between 3-5 eggs a week, don't even know if the EE is laying. please just take them!

Went to put the girls to bed and close up the coop, and all four were right inside the door passed out asleep. I guess they aren't too sure about how far they want to get in there for now. The door closes, and run is secure, so I just left them. I hated to move them and mess them up. It's been a long day for them changing homes and all.

Changed my mind last night and put them up on the roost. Went out to open up this morning and they were still up there sleeping it out.
