YO GEORGIANS! :)

Winder GA here! Late to the thread, but it still looks active :) Can anyone direct me to somewhere local to get laying hens?

Thanks!:woot

Hi! Welcome!
I don't know about laying hens, but a lot of members here sell hatching eggs and chicks that will (in time) become laying hens. :)

We've got Serama pairs for sale  (no single hens)....PM me if you'd like to set a time to come by :)

I wish I could have another rooster. Lol!!! I have 2 right now. And I live on a small island with close neighbors. They would kill me!!!! Plus, I am waiting to see if my 3 AC eggs hatch....if I get a cockerel......well then bye bye CCL Cockerel,.....I think 2 is my limit. Technically I can't have any. My lot is smaller than 2 acres per county ordinance.

that's true after breaking it open,

in egg inspection classes they teach you to candle for what's caked a fertile ring means egg cell is intact and 98% of the time this means a fertile EGG LOL!now that I had been keeping everyone in the air Lol now us know lol!! Had to give everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS present LOL!!!

funny, the GA Dept of Ag egg handling class I took never said anything about a fertile ring. Googling 'candling an egg for fertility' shows a lot of pages, but having skimmed through about 20 so far, the earliest I've found so far that any sign of fertility can be detected by candling is 4 days of incubation, and it becomes a spot and veins that start to look like a spider web coming from it. Still haven't found anything about any 'fertility ring'.

the main thing the egg candling class I took, and Rocky Rhodes could verify since he was in that same class with me, talked about was the size of the air cell. Because that class is pretty much for egg handling for the purpose of selling EATING eggs, and they want to make sure you know how to tell safe from non safe eggs. I personally don't remember anything at all said about candling an egg showing anything about fertility. Everything I've read SO FAR, (not to say I won't find something about it as I go through these pages) says the only way to know if the rooster is doing his job is to break some eggs and look for the dot on the yolk. (the bullseye Flower mentioned)  If you're talking about some other class you've taken, ok I guess......but I'm putting my stock in what the Dept of Ag class taught me.

So if you're saying you're incubating and then candling them at 4 days and they're starting to show the dot and the veins, ok I'll buy that. If you're telling me you're 98% sure any time sooner than that because you can candle an egg and see that white dot on the yolk, sorry I ain't buying what you're selling.

here's the link to a page from right here on our very own favorite website: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/candling-pics-progression-through-incubation-of-chicken-eggs

you'll notice that the discussion is about 'incubation of chicken eggs) not eggs you've taken out from under the chicken and candled. I've also read that you shouldn't refrigerate eggs you want to incubate, and that you should get them started within 10 days of being laid.
yeah and I know about the egg class deal just wanted to see if I could get some - people up in the air-LooK guess you didn't read in the post that comment and I have one more thing to add MERRY CHRISTMAS one more thought a hatching egg is kinda like an unopened gift -SOMETIMES YA DINT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GONNA GET LOL!!but I did get us going papachaz

so your whole post was all about getting people 'up in the air'? To try to 'get us going papachaz'?? whatever that means.....I'm betting that like most of your posts, you're the only one who actually has a clue what you mean. but reality is, your post was more like putting out false information on purpose. Yeah I read the whole post, the thing is, and this goes pretty much for all your posts, I have so much trouble figuring out what you are actually trying to say I suppose I didn't get that as you were actually TRYING to post wrong information you were making some type of gift joke? You know, like that part where you posted that you went to an egg handling class that taught you that you could candle an egg and see a 'fertile ring' and that would prove to be 98% proof that the egg was fertile......goodness knows I'm not the only one who was totally confused by your post, just look at the post immediately following your post.

I would also think that purposely posting false information is against the rules. People who don't know much come in this website to learn, so next time you think it will be cute to post something that's not right as some type of a joke that only YOU understand, just don't do it. Someone might read that and think you actually know what you're talking about.

actually I'm going to report your post because, think this through, you posted eggs for sale, then made up this whole thing about how you could tell within 98% certainty that they were fertile because of being taught you could candle an egg and see a 'fertile ring' in some egg handling class. Now you're basically admitting you know that's incorrect? so now, how does that look for anyone who might have been thinking about buying some of them?

I rarely use it, but I have to say thank you to whomever on the board put in the ability to block people.....

Sorry about this whole issue I can see that you cannot take a joke and that's is what's getting to a lot of people some of us take everything way too serious ,it dad when people can poke a bad side at another person but cannot take it themselves ,and if YOU can't understand then I must apologize for YOUR misunderstanding at a light hearted poke of a little fun

He's quite handsome! I'll let you know what we decide. Is he a blue or is that a trick of the light? What is he mixed with?

Oh, by the way @Flowerbh, the mystery chick from the swap was CCL and Bramah! She gave us a olive colored egg today.

Hers is in the middle. Other olive egger on the left, SLW on the right for comparison.
I got an egg like your olive one in the middle today!!! My neighbor thought I colored it, my very first olive egg,

PM gachickennewbie, she has the hook up to some buff orphington, I bought some from ga's friend and very happy with the birds. but they are 20 bucks each but not sickly and they were hens and of good stock, so to me it was worth it. course maybe the price is cheaper who knows, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Will do, and likewise if you ever want any littles like ours :)
I might in the summer which translates to yep, yep, yep
