Checking for age, blood spots, cracks, anything out of character. This is a very dumb question....
Why do you need to candle eggs for consumption? I am slightly embarrassed to ask, but I'm new!

Nice!Remember me mentioning the one unhatched egg from the New Years Day hatch? I just threw it under my other broody. I just candled it and it has pipped internally! So, I am firing up my little mini bator and will put it in there later tonight! This egg is from a frizzled NN, so maybe another NN! I don't want that broody to hatch it because she might not want to stay on the other eggs. Those still have about 5-6 day? Really don't know for sure!
And they give you the rules regarding proper labeling, expiration date, etc.X2
Plus, the class teaches you how to clean, store and transport your eggs for safety. You would not want to sell bad eggs.
Flowerbh...Thanks! I will look into it....If you sell eggs away from your home (like at a farmers market or even to take them to someone) you need an egg candlers license. Contact the GA Dept. of Agriculture and sign up for the free class. You will be given tons of pages to read and then you take a test. You will also have to candle eggs. If you only want to sell a few and people come to your house to pick them up, you don't need a license. I think you should get one no matter what. You will learn a ton of information about eggs!
Oh I can't wait for my babies in the spring, congrats on yours, love the picAbout 6 months ago, I had 3 hens and a rooster become permanent free rangers. They started living at my neighbors and he started feeding them. Well, being we were soon to move, I told them they were his if he wanted them. He came to me earlier and said one of them had bitties and she lost one today. Being I have a pen to put them in, they are now mine so that no more are lost. After 2 years of her never going broody, I now have a mama and four bitties and Needless to say, I'm excited![]()
look up in a tree with a flash light bet you find her there let us know, I hope all is wellI'd appreciate any opinions on my current situation. I have a door to an area where birds are supposed to stay.(one half of the yard) I was going out so decided to prop the door open with a heavy log so everyone could come out and free range the rest of the fenced yard.
When I returned at 8pm I saw the door had shut because the log was moved? or fell? Anyway, the turkey parents couldn't get to the coop. I found the tom but can't find the hen anywhere. I'm hoping I just missed her and she'll show up in the morning. Kinda hard to hide a big white turkey. I brought the poult inside to keep warm. Poor hen must have been frantic to get to her baby.
I feel so bad.
