YO GEORGIANS! :)

We had our barred rock chick hatch yesterday at day 21. The 5 Welsummers still haven't hatched (day 22), but I did see one pipping today - so good sign (assuming the eggs can handle the chick playing romper room with them - she is pretty active). btw - ignore the temperature on that thermometer - its there for humidity - temp is 99.5 in the incubator.

Anyone know if its OK to pull the chick out before the others have hatched? She hatched yesterday around 5pm - assuming the Welsummers hatch today they won't be dry till tomorrow - so that could be 2 days w/o food for the rock before she gets food and water.

Thoughts?

Got my 2 Dozen Barred Rock eggs with only 3 broken thanks to the USPS.. They were packed perfectly so I am just hoping the rest aren't scrambled. 21 Barred Rock-- 12 Mixes -- 20 bantam ameraucanas = using 2 incubators.

Turns out there were 3 more Barred Rock eggs with cracks for a total of 6 damaged so I am down to 18 in the incubator. The USPS must have kicked that box around like a football. Still hoping some of them hatch.

Oh wow. The best chickens I had over the years were Buff and Dark Brahma bantams. Loved them. I am waiting on the 20 eggs to be brought by my brother inlaw. Also have a few bonus eggs that should arrive today or tomorrow if weather permits.

I give them bread and potatoes.  They have a deep bed of wheat bran then I just lay a slice of bread or two on the surface from time to time.  The potatoes are for moisture.  I have used other bedding but they like the wheat best.

Also have a couple of pieces of lightly crumpled newspaper in each container.  They like to hide in it and eventually eat it, too.

Carcar ... to feed or to start farming?
I know this is way late... But I think I might like to farm a little. With some direction!

I adore my Brahmas. They are LF though. They're not the most space- or feed-efficient, but they are THE most easy-to-deal with birds I've ever had.

let me know if you want to put in a garden, I think we could work out some incubator time for some tractor work with the tiller  ;)

if my chickens ever start laying again  :gig
LOL! You know there's no trade for incubator space, silly! The farming would be of the meal worm variety, though.. No tilling required. Or optional at most.

I would actually like to come look at your incubator some day, I am seriously considering building one and I'd need to see the inner workings. I'd love to find a glass front 'wine cooler' size refrigerator that's quit working to convert into one.....

Chicks can go for at least 3 days without water or food. That is why hatcheries can send chicks in the mail without problems with feeding/watering them. Congrats on your little ones! Love those dark eggs! I am hoping my BCM has dark eggs like yours!

I have heard it is not good to remove chicks from the incubator if you have other eggs that are pipping. The change in the incubator is dramatic when you lift the lid. Think of it as when you are taking a shower and then pull back the shower curtain/door. The room fills with humidity and the mirror gets all fogged over and you get cold! Well, it's kind of like that with eggs, but reversed. The membrane inside the shell does a shrink job on the chick inside. So, don't worry about the little chick, they will be fine for 3 days. And, their chirping helps the others to want to get out and play!
