besides, she wasn't talking about hatchery stock, and you said yourself "Once you start breeding them at home, you start losing that ability"

that is pretty cool about the feathers though, what age is best to look for that?

and what about breeders? so I'd say ok for hatchery chicks, but home grown and/or breeders who don't key on that, old wives tale. Present company included bahahaha

Sorry, Papa, I disagree here. Hatcheries breed their parent stock males to be slow feathering. The females are fast feathering. That is why they can feather sex most of their breeds. Notice I said most breeds. Those that can't be feather sexed are vent sexed. Keep in mind, that I am saying hatchery chicks. Once you start breeding them at home, you start losing that ability.

Like I said, once you no longer have parent stock bred for slow or fast feathering, you can no longer depend on this. And, Easter Eggers can't be feathered sexed!

These are bred from hatchery chicks, so I'm still hopeful :)

Well, maybe not, since these are from a variety of roosters. I guess we will see!

In other news, incubator has the silky eggs, which were not as nice as I had hoped. They all floated at one end, but I soaked them a while, and it looks like at least 2 are developing.
Also have about a dozen from my RIR pen, but since they hadn't been separated that long, still might have some mixes too. Old Blade, my Olive Egger rooster, seems to like to be in the gene pool.
Then one of the hens flew OVER the chicken house (12 feet high), and as I ran to grab her, Blade beat me to it. He bred her TWICE while I was crossing the yard.
The hen flew to the edge of the roof, then ran up and over, so I guess she only had to get 8' up, but still.....

Now I need a second incubator to use as a hatcher. Then I can add more eggs, and then pull the first ones out but leave the others in the turner. UGH
Chicken math....

When I was hatching all those EE last year, I could feather sex them. A lot of them went to friends so I was able to see how accurate it turned out to be. :idunno

Hi Cliff. Are you talking about starting the swap up at the Tractor Supply again, I would look forward to coming. A few of my original gals are no longer laying so I am looking to add new chicks this spring. I am also thinking about adding a burbon ref turkey or two for my own Thanksgiving rather than store bought. I hope o find these locally rather than from farther away. I have Cream legbar hatching eggs arriving next weekend (keeping fingers crossed).
