Woke up to one baby chick and 13 pips! So, should be a fun day. But most importantly, all my four children, their spouses and my 6 grandchildren have arrived safely for our early Easter! Too bad it is suppose to rain most the day. But, we will have hatching chicks to keep us busy!

They are in a coop with no heat, but that 30 degrees Monday morning is still making me hesitate on moving them to the "big" pen.
Their playroom is better insulated.

Hoping to sell off the extra roos today, then my friend picks up her 9 hens on Monday, so I can see what is actually left in the barnyard mix pen.

they're fully feathered, there's nothing to worry about at all! my 4 week olds are out in the big coop with no heat, in their own divided section of course. by week 4-5, they're almost completely feathered and there's no worries about cold any more ;)

I am so nervous about moving my 3... 6 wk old chicks into the big coop with my 2 big 1 year olds...
I've let the babies go in and I've run interference a few times but yesterday my production red hen was relentless... She even went at me for getting between her and the chicks!! My leghorn had started at them a few times but then got bored ...
I'm so worried !!!

My best advice for adding babies to an older flock is you've multiple food and water sources (that is what causes many pecks), and making sure the babies have somewhere they can shelter that bigger birds can't fit. I've even taken a wire dog crate, blocked the door with cardboard and made a hole just big enough for the babies.. Then put their own food and water in it. That way they can seek shelter in there, AND you can feed them food you don't care to waste on the bigger birds. :)
