YO GEORGIANS! :)

No, he's not poisonous. And yes there are differing head shapes that can help clue you in, although there are some non-venomous that can look pretty daunting too!

See if this link works for you.. It's a great picture tutorial.

Awesome. Thanks! It was definitely a Rat Snake. I normally leave them alone because we do have an issue with field mice. Or, we did last year. I had just never seen a teenaged one, only full grown adult so I had no idea that's what I was dealing with, that slide show helps a lot. Next time, it will just be re-homed. Finding it in my coop just sorta shocked me at first and that pisses me off. Me ****** off=he had to die. Period.

Thanks for the advice. I think that's your BO in the middle of the first picture.
Snake surprise will give you body shock!

......... I rehomed all of them in Davy Jones' locker in my lake. They make excellent turtle food.
She's cute! can't wait to meet her!

I had the flu for about 2 days, not really sick sick..,.just achy and coughy. But DH has had it for over a week now. He has lost 7 pounds this week. Went to doctor and found out his diabetes is all over the place. I'm sure that's why its taking him longer to get better.

hope he gets to feeling better soon! Illnesses that make healing from common ailments are no fun at all. Glad you are feeling better!

I'm sure by Orps you mean 100% Orp(?).
I'll be bring some eggs for Kat but with James around, I'll have no way of knowing whether they're BO/BO or BO/EE crossed.

I may have a couple of Black Marans eggs, but again, they'll either be crossed with a BO or a EE. I'll try to get to a dozen and they're free to whomever wants some. Never hatched eggs & I have no idea how to tell if fertilzed without cracking it open. I've seen many that were fertilized that way, right before I eat them.

Like storing them? Ideally, in a cool area-- turn at least twice daily. Set by 10 days but I've gone up to two weeks with no issue.

On the other hand, I've also taken eggs from the refrigerator that have been turned zero times and are two weeks old.. With no issues.

glad this question was answered today! Perfect timing, too. I logged in to ask this very question. I started collecting eggs today again since I just dewormed a couple weeks ago. I know the withhold period is 7 days from last dose for this one, but I always do 10 JIC.

Oh gosh, he was SUCH a happy boy!

Speaking of kitties.. Don't think I'm crazy but I NEED a mouser around here. Well, around the barn. Seriously.

So in just a bit I'm going to meet Roscoe. A fully vetted/neutered shelter rescue who is being offered FREE as a barn cat just because he gives ecstasy nips with over-petting. PLEASE wish us luck!!

He is NOT to replace Billy as a beloved pet, but as a mouser with his own new personality and I'm so hopeful he will work out! The rescue says they will accept him back if not. So I'm loving that he's a "double rescue" of sorts.

Pointy side down! Rotate several times a day. Cool place. Not more than 10 days old.

Yes I guess if you're planning them for someone else you'll definitely want to do all that. Wasn't sure if you meant just for you.

I turn all my eggs I'm gonna sell. My own just stay on the counter.
just to clarify something, when they say rotate, they don't mean turn the egg over in the carton, it means set one end of the carton up on a book or something, then at least three times a day, swap which end of the carton is elevated.

This keeps the insides from sticking to one place in the shell. It's why birds roll the eggs when they sit on them, if you watch any of the Berry College Eagle cams, when they were sitting on the eggs, you'd see them several times a day reach under with their beaks and roll the eggs around

@katiedarling - either/or would be fine, I just want to mix up the brown eggs I'm getting, or more EE's would be ok with me too

I gave up and let the hens go broody, I have 4 or 5, I think one was thinking about it, I don't know so between two hens so far I have 5.5 chicks. and egg production has been hit hard.

Now question, I have about 1 week old chicks, and would like to sneak them in and let the broodys raise them after all the hatching is done, any tricks/tips or abandon the idea?

so do you have any of them now that are laying? LOL cage a couple of them in isolation, they'll decide quick they don't really wanna be baby momma......:D
I'm now down to four non-broody. Out of NINE hens.

I've been avoiding the breaking because of the extra feeder/waterer but I've about had it. LOL

I have one nest that is a rotation between hens, have no idea who is really sitting on them, they just get mad when I peek, DH thinks it's funny to wavy his finger at them and they start squawking at him

I'm sorry about your loss and happy for your gain,, put lots of food in the barn so he knows to stay and he will settle in I'm sure

yeah mine will spread her wings, duck her head down and flat out GROWL at me just for raising the lid to check on her. She really got ticked at me last night when I took the eggs out for ten day candling, One was clear, the other 5 looked good. I'm thinking I may just put her and those five in with the rest of the AMs and let her raise them, I was planning on growing some out to sell, I might ease some of these others in with her and them and see if I can sneak it past her.

I actually thought about taking the 11 eggs I have in the incubator to her to sit on and hatch, and put the ones she's sitting on in the incubator. Let her be my 'hatching point' and then put eggs back under her after the hatch. Wonder how that would work out
