YO GEORGIANS! :)

So, I was reading this homesteader book and it said that one of the things chickens need was milk. ????? I was wondering if this is the homesteaders way to provide calcium. I thought it was strange. The book also said chickens won't eat cabbage.....What?!?! My chickens can and will eat a whole cabbage in less than 20 minutes! Now, I'm not sure I want to believe anything else in this book.

So, what is the last thing you want to hear from potential chick buyers?

"I need to come and get more chicks from you because something keeps getting all my chicks!"

Ugh! And, why do I want to sell these adorable sweet chicks that I've babied and loved to you???? So that something will get them because you don't want to take the trouble to build something predator proof? Even one of my best friends lost the chocolate runner duck I gave her because they don't cover their run or enclose it and many times they just leave them out all night because they are too tired to do it......so something came over the fence and killed him and their other duck. They have lost lots of chickens to predators. (I hope she's not reading this!)

But, I can't tell you how many times I hear that statement!

BTW, where is everyone??????

funny because I was just having very similar thoughts this past week. Someone who bought chicks from me, bought more chicks because something happened to some of the first batch. Makes you wonder....and I know carcar sold her some chicks too, and when she was here last week picking up the last 4 she mentioned needing some more because something had gotten them. I will make a point to not sell her any more.....

AND THEN..........no, I'm not saying anything else. I'm trying to get that little "don't say that" thing in my head fixed bahahaha

oh, and I just realized I just hit 6 years on here! wow how time flies when you're having so much fun hehehe

I am the same way! I know bad things happen but at least try to prevent it because it is possible. If you have chicks dead all the time or getting killed, why keep adding chicks and thinking they have a better chance? I blame it on ignorance or the fact that some people are just stupid.

If someone makes that statement to me. I am straight up with them, did you fix the problem or would you rather pay me for these and just kill them instead of waiting for something else to do it "again"? I had one person build their coop with plastic netting and they could not believe something tore through it and killed all of their chickens. WTH? Really? Most predators can tear through chicken wire and you thought plastic netting would work better?

Some people want to build a coop as cheaply as possible and I am all about being cheap (so I have heard) but when you pay for chickens, pay for feed, take the time to raise them, and then have them all killed and have to buy more chickens, how is that saving money?

I blame it on hormones and antibiotics in the food we are eating. That is better than saying, some folks are just idiots.

Wow 6 years! Chickens didn't exist for me 6 years ago. Who would have ever thought I would have so many now!

Ummm, DH came home with some of that plastic stuff for our new coop.....said the saleperson told him it was just as good and really cheap! I couldn't believe he thought I would even consider it! Didn't even make it out of the truck....took it back for the heavy duty hardware cloth!

Last year I sold over 100 chicks to a guy. I saw him last fall and asked him how all the chicks were. He hung his head and said a pack of coyotes broke thru the chicken wire and killed every one of them! My poor babies! At least he said he wasn't going to get any more until he could 'fix' the problem.

I would have took it back and questioned the salesperson in a way to find out just how stupid he or she really is.

I prefer hardware cloth or welded wire of any size. Anytime I use chicken wire I put what I call Dog Wire over it. I don't know the true name for Dog Wire. It has the rectangles that are about 2" X 4". I always put the dog wire on the outside. Then I zip-tie them together so that nothing can get between them. Not the best looking but has always worked for me. I have used them together over the tops of kennels and runs.

That is so sad to have wasted 100 chicks. At least he sees the problem and didn't come get more to be killed.
