YO GEORGIANS! :)

My Welsummer died last week of an impacted crop. So sad.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. :( Did any of the chicks from the dark dark Marans eggs you got at that show hatch and make it? Hopefully you'll still have a dark egg layer from them?

I stopped using TSC for feed, as the local one here the feed is close to if not out of date. Per Purina and Nuturna the feed should be used within 4 months, give or take a few days. Most of the feed at the local TSC is 3 plus months, thus only per manufacturer allowing @ 30 days or less to use up. That is cutting it close for me.

I wonder if the manager is simply ordering up too much or if someone higher up the chain is providing more than that particular store can sell within a reasonable time. Might be worth bringing it to their attention even if you've got another good source. Never know when THAT source may begin shenanigans. :)

I agree that could be the problem, our TSC runs out of chick food alot and sometimes even the layer runs out.

Only bought four Marans eggs. 2 were not fertile. Only one hatched and of course, it was a boy!

Ordered some dark dark Marans hatching eggs from a guy off ebay.. They all were watery inside when I got them. I called the guy and told him. Nothing developed, He sent more and they were watery, too. Nothing developed.

Not only did my Welsummer die, but the Golden Cuckoo Marans died, too! Both my dark egg layers. They were both a few months old. I think the new feed I got just didn't do anything for the juveniles. They grew so fast at that age, they weren't getting the right nutrition or it was bad feed. Whatever, Was really sad that I have no dark egg layers growing out now!

That's just awful! I'm so sorry! When my two girls start laying I'll be sure to put a few aside for you. Hopefully my roosters will be doing their thing by then and I'll have some fertile eggs. They would be olive eggers at best though, it's Rufio (son of your Beau and an EE) and a White Crested black polish over our flock right now. The polish JUST started crowing though, and Rufio hasn't started yet, so I don't think they're mounting any of the hens yet. Or if they is he's being mighty sneaky about it.

Have a question, my buff O that went broody and hatched a couple of eggs, 21 plus days, now have a problem trying to get her reintroduced to the rest of the chickens she is not broody but the other hens want to jump on her and peck her and they try to keep her from eating and drinking, yet the all roost together at night. She either tryst to stay in the coop or nest box all day, but if I let them free range, she will go as far away from the rest of the flock as possible, if she tries to get close to the others they run and jump on her. Anybody have any thoughts or ideas or if anything I can do or how to resolve this problem, short of getting rid of all the chickens. Thanks

Where are the chicks, she should still be wanting to be a mom, mine stay with the chicks and protects them until time for the mom to say "fly the coop", and she slowly introduces them to the flock, least that is what mine are doing and when mom is not being a mom she is with the flock no problems, so maybe someone else will have words of wisdom.

She has basically lost any interest in the chicks and practically tried to eliminate one of them. Fortunate I was there when she went after the chick, I tried several time to reunite them with no luck. So basically don't feel it is in the chicks best interest to leave them together. But she is scared and isolated around the other hens.

No you can't put the chicks back with her she will kill them, wow she is acting like she didn't hatch them, that is how other hens act towards other chicks, I got lucky and have a hen that will take in strays, she went to bed with about 8 of her own and when she woke up she had a total of 22, lol I would have pulled my hair out, but she took care of them all and now they are grown up and she is sitting on more eggs, go figure. But not all hens will take to chicks like that. I have 2 broodies and they have hatched one chick so far, they are still sitting and have them separate from the other birds and each other, they each have their own nursery so they can stretch their legs and show the new chick how to eat, sure hope those other eggs hatch soon. So I have no idea what is going on with your girl, give em a watermelon, food makes everything alright, lol Guess she wanted to see what all the hype was about hatching eggs and decided it was for the birds,

sounds like she is going to have to re-learn her place in the pecking order. keep us posted, good luck
