My DH (darling husband for the newbies) is always trying to get me to watch it. NOPE can't do it, lolWhere the Red Fern Grows is an AMAZING movie, well worth a good cry.
...Come on now girls; wipe away those tears, we have chickens chase; we have biddys to hatch and eggs to gather!
The tale of two broodies:
Once there were two broodies. One was a Crested Cream Legbar named Robin and one was a Silkie/NN mix named Bindy. One night, the egg fairy granted their wish by putting 9 eggs under each one. After the first week, the egg fairy came by to see how they were doing. All the eggs were fertile and growing well. A few days later, the egg fairy noticed that there was a broken egg under Bindy, so she removed it. A few days later, another egg was found outside the nest. It had been broken and was all dried out. Another visit showed that one of Robin's eggs had died an early death and more of Bindy's eggs were missing. Today, the egg fairy visited again and found 7 cute healthy chicks had hatched under Robin and only 3 hatched from under Bindy. All the remaining eggs were candled. Those under Bindy were all watery. The one that didn't hatch under Robin had a blood ring in it and had died along the way.
The moral of the story is that as bad as some chickens want to be Moms, some just aren't cut out for it! Bindy is broody ALL the time, but she has NEVER had a good hatch rate! I will post pictures later or tomorrow. I'm going to get a hair cut! Yay!
Good Morning!! I'm a new member, but I've been getting answers from this site for about a month. This is the best site ever, especially for new chicken caretakers. We're in Brunswick Georgia which is just about 45 minutes north of the Georgia/Florida line.
