When it comes to animals, some people tell you how they feel, not what the law says. Some counties do have strict laws but no one to enforce them until there's a complaint. This leads to people doing things for years without a problem but then when something happens they're surprised when they find out there's a law against it. Some metro counties are just now opening up to allowing some hens but still no roosters unless you have a certain sized piece of land. And about that "can't shoot a dog to protect livestock unless posted".... I would DEFINITELY be looking to see that in writing. It certainly is not state law but I can't speak to local ordinances. But many people think that one can't be charged with trespass unless the property is posted and that simply is not true so I have my doubts about protecting livestock without posted signs.

Just stopping by to say hello as a new member from GA. I am up in Union County, about 5 miles from the NC border.

I am just getting started, still researching what breed and where to get my chicks.

I was going to have to rehome a few extra roosters. I hatched all of these so all I really had in them was the feed for the last 6 months. Well, except for the MFD, I got that one from carcar. I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on a pack of wild dogs. I know there are small kids that live at that house and these were pets to them, I hate I had to kill one of them, but wouldn't hesitate to do it again. As for them moving, if you could see the place, you'd know it wouldn't matter, this is all thats ever going to live in a place like that.

Don't post on here often but your stories make me so mad!! My own story in Fannin County was a pit bull that routinely broke through my fence to visit my dogs. She really was ok but it was a matter of time before she got to the birds who free range IN MY FENCED YARD. Fenced because another dog-no longer here- killed a number of birds and another neighbor objected to the birds "moving his leaves around" He noted this when he visited once a month.

Back to the pit bull, I was fortunate that AC here was helpful to me. I was told I could shoot the dog if it was interfering with livestock--ie chickens. I never had to do it and finally AC removed the dog for the second time and a rescue group rehomed it. ( I know people in the animal community and was able to follow what happened to the dog)

Why is life so complicated for chickens and chicken people?

Katsdar--I think you said you would have a court issue on your birds free ranging? One suggestion is to start a petition in your support. There is a site called Care2 where one can start a petition that reaches people all over the world. It's free-I believe and you already have all the members on BYC. I'd be happy to assist.

Even with local law enforcement they don't know everything AC here says you can't shoot a dog but state law does. And the marshals said I could no matter what the AC says and he was standing there!

Hey Papachaz ... did you say that you did lose your MFD rooster? I have one that also came from carcar that I have no real need for. He's yours if you want him.

no ma'am, that was one I was going to rehome, I parted ways with all but this one and two hens, then went out one morning and the two hens were dead, so it was just him. I wasn't going to worry about any more of them, but thank you anyway my friend!

in response to Kat and Robo, it's not just that people don't know the ordinances/laws, I'm amazed at how many people employed in law enforcement don't really have a clue either. which really ticks me off, how in the world can they enforce laws they don't know and understand?

Yeah I wasn't happy that I was put into the position of having to kill those little kid's dog, but I'm not going to get dog bit in my own yard after I just lost close to $200 worth of chickens, not counting all the expense that only we as chicken people can understand. But like I said, I didn't ASK to be put in that position, but did what I had to do, and would do it again. The young man we dealt with yesterday, late teens early twenties, who was home alone, and was the one responsible for dogs yesterday, admitted he apparently didn't get the door latched well when he left and the dogs must have pushed it open. I know he got in trouble when mom got home.......but what if one of the cars that almost hit those dogs in the road had had an accident that injured someone seriously, they would have been totally responsible for that. Most people don't realize it, but the dog owner is responsible if someone hits their dog and it does significant damage.....

exactly the same thing I was told....GA does allow you to protect yourself/property. Not sure even local ordinances could be used against someone in an extreme case either

I haven't been on here in a long time. It's nice to see some of the same people are still here.

I guess I'm feeling a little bummed at the moment and felt the need to seek out my fellow GA chicken peeps. I'm still relatively new to chickens. I still have 7 out of my 8 first chickens I got 3 or 4 years ago. I lost one of my RIR hens around the holidays and now I'm about to lose the other one. No idea what's wrong with her or how to help her. Same symptoms as my other one. I wondering if she's egg bound. All of my other hens seem healthy and happy.

I decided to add to my flock by picking up 6 chicks earlier this week at the feed store - 2 Welsummers, 2 Arauconas (sp?) and 2 Marans. I lost one of the Maran chicks in the first 24 hours. Not sure what happened to it. Very frustrated! I was so excited to finally have a couple of Marans. Hopefully I can get a couple of replacements.
