Does candling help at all with really dark eggs (Maran)? You can see spots in white and lite brown - but you can't see anything in the really dark ones.

Just curious.

I use a really bright LED flashlight. Don't know the lumens on it, but it does a pretty good job. But with the really dark ones there is some guessing going on.

You could let them out late in the day and then they will go in by themselves at dusk, 

I was thinking the same thing, I let mine out late in the day for about a hour. Then they go back in at dark.

LOL, you sound just like me...I would be happy on 100 acres, with a 10ft stone wall around it, with my house and animals smack in the middle...LOL

and tall thick evergreen trees growing all over it to guard it from above

I just bought 4 buff orpington pullets from the local feed and seed.I candle my eggs I have in the incubator out of 12 two weren't fertile 3 with blood rings and 7 look like they were developing.
