Just went out to take a peek under my broody! All six eggs hatched! I think it's funny that these eggs came from 6 very different chickens and all the chicks are black and look alike! Can't wait to get a closer view to see if they are feather legged or not!
Moms were: An EE, Swedish Flower, Fizzled EE, Frizzled Naked Neck (chick does not have the NN gene), an Olive Egger and I think, my little NN Penelope (did not get the NN gene). One chick is obviously going to have a crest and is smaller than the others. That one could either be from the Swedish Flower or Penelope. (Both crested birds)
Here is photo of Penelope
All chicks have feathered legs, so most likely the dad is Emerson, the Brahma. I don't think the other roosters were active back then....well they are now! Can't wait to bring my fun and funky hatching eggs to the exchange! I think all three roosters will be contributing by then!
six EEs, three Buff Brahmas, two Porcelain, and 4 game. All bantams. I ordered from them about ten years ago and didn't have any problems. I don't know why there was so many weak and one dead and one with legs spread out on the floor. It was strange to me also and very disappointing.

I went out to my yard and was putting up chickens and when I looked on the ground and found one hen laid out and I thought she was dead, picked her up to throw her in the trash can and put her in it and she opened her eyes looked up at me and I could see she was still in there, you know the look I mean, took her inside gave her a warm bath and just let the warm water run over her until she started to perk up a bit, towel and blow dried her have her in my sewing room under a heat lamp and she is drinking!!!! She should make it!!!! I don't know why chickens don't go inside when it's raining, lots do but you always have a couple that just stay in the rain when I have so many areas they can go to for shelter even if they don't want to go in a house.
. I know that you are excited. I do not have any chickens old enough to lay and set yet. I believe that the chicks do much better when hatched by a hen. I ordered some chicks from Murray McMurray. They arrived Wednesday. One passed away before they got here, one was weak and only lived a couple of hours, one had legs that he couldn't stand on and one passed away the first night. McMurray refunded my money but that didn't help my hurt over the little chicks. My husband said that we are not going to order anymore in the mail. The chicks that made it are cute though.
Robin, we had weird weather last week, and the USPS doesn't always treat your packages with the care they deserve. McMurray hatchery has a good reputation, and they treated you right by refunding your money. However, I agree with your husband. I've never ordered chicks or hatching eggs by mail, and so far I have ALWAYS made the drive to either pick up or drop off hatching eggs, chicks, or chickens. That being said, some people have little other option than to order by mail, so I understand the need for mail order.
Actually, if I couldn't find a breed available that I wanted within driving distance and McMurray had that breed available, after reading your post, I would probably go with McMurray because they stood behind their product even though the loss may have not been their fault. I respect that kind of service.
Also, with raising chicks, some just die. It comes with the territory. One day your birds can look perfectly healthy, and then the next morning you may discover one that passed away during the night for no apparent reason. It's always a bummer when that happens.
It seems that your chicks that survived shipment are already growing on you, and I bet the happiness that you and your husband get from them will more than make up for the losses. If there is anything that I can do to help, just let me know.

Hahaha! But, I did just read that a hen and chicks in the shell do communicate! That is so cool. I guess that is how the hen knows that some eggs are no good and they kick them out of the nest!
