YO GEORGIANS! :)

7 in 7 out I have 14 babies that we're hatched a week or so ago. I was afraid the rain for the next few days might take them from me since their mamas are in relatively open coops. I left 4 with one two with another and 1 with another. I brought the smallest ones in but may bring the rest in tomorrow. All the hens are good mamas but two of them are in the layer pen. They are Silkie chicks so won't do well in rain. The 4 chicks with the Cochin mama are in a carrier with her in the other coop and won't get wet tonight. The layer coop has doors I can close on the nest boxes with the other two mamas but not a good situation since it is above ground and if the chicks got out they could never get back to the foster mamas. They should be ok till I get out there tomorrow morning. To complicated, why do I do this to myself?

:welcome What kind of flock do you have.

I have two silkie chicks. They are 10 days old and are supposedly a partridge and a splash. I’m not certain the splash is actually a splash. Do the spots show later?

I was hoping for two pullets, but I’m starting to think the partridge is a cockerel. When we first got the chicks at two days old, the partridge would hide under the splash whenever we’d reach in to their bin. But starting yesterday, the partridge has starting charging at us, especially if we reach in and pull out the splash. Does anyone know if this behavior would indicate it’s a cockerel or if pullets could do this too?

Picture of chicks for attention.

It's hard to tell at that age, but that partridge looks cocky. It sounds like it acts cocky too. I'd guess cockerel, but it's just a guess. I think, with the splash, the spots may come when the feathers do. Nice looking chicks.
:thumbsup

Yeah, that’s what I was afraid of. We can’t have Roos here. Sigh... I guess we gotta find another chick.

There's no way you can tell at that age. I've had future pullets come at my hand, same as future cockerels. I wouldn't rehome yet. Watch the comb. If it starts getting large or mulberry colored, you have a problem. But the nicer the silkie, the harder they are to tell apart.
