Snake season is in full swing so make sure your chicks are protected.

If you are missing eggs there is a good chance that a rat snake or some other large colubrid has eaten them.

I have re-homed 3 black rat snakes so far this year. I did have two of my 4 week old chicks get eaten this weekend at a nearby farm. The chicks were both large fowl. I was surprised that they were still targets for black rat snakes.

Thank you for the heads up! I don't mind losing the occasional egg but I'm extremely cautious when I have broody hens with chicks. I'm sorry you lost some!

I had given a Biel boy and a SLW / ICO boy to someone wanting a roo. I was surprised that the snake could get them down.

I could see an Indigo , Timber or Eastern Diamondback able to eat that size prey or possibly a large Pine or Bull snake.

Thanks! They’re free to anyone who can pick them up in Douglasville this weekend and promises to hatch them. They shipped Monday from a big farm in the NE and arrived today at noon. I immediately unboxed them (packaged very securely, by the way), and they’ve been resting ever since. Planning to load 120 of the 220 in the incubator in the morning.

Congrats! You are in my town! We have 7 week old chicks. First time chicken mama!
