YO GEORGIANS! :)

There will be a pretty big poultry show and swap meet at the Newnan Fairgrounds this upcoming weekend. Shopping hours are Friday 9 am-9 pm, Saturday 6 am-9 pm.

All shows and swaps have been cancelled until further notice. Too bad because I was really looking forward to it BUT now I really have an excess of birds if I can't sell!

Sorry about the swap! That is a shame.

What is everyone doing about the bird flu situation? That flyer says we “must” keep them indoors, but is that a legal requirement?

My birds are completely free range right now so I will have to talk to my other half about spending $$ for an enclosed run for my favorites. I think a flock reduction is in my future ☹️

So, from what I’ve heard…:

That’s in regards to following best practices for bio security so it’s not necessarily a requirement. More like a strong suggestion.

Avian flu has only been detected in (I think, going from memory) Kentucky and Indiana in factory farm flocks and in one backyard Flock in Virginia. There has been avian flu detected in wild birds in Hart County, GA. The directive from the state is meant to protect large scale producer flocks because apparently we produce something like 30% of the commercial poultry meat in GA. So naturally we are the problem for spreading it….

I’m not sure having some chickens in a run and the rest free range would help. So long as there can be contact it will spread but I’d defer to other BYC members for clarification or other science-y sources.

EDIT: Just want to add that it’s extremely important for all of us in the southeast/east coast to send birds in for necropsies that die from illness or mystery reasons and/or have serologies done on sick birds. This can help government agencies track the spread or, hopefully, confirm the lack of spread.

Heres an article that was updated to address confusion regarding sales.

I bet the GA dept of Ag was getting a lot of calls about this. Now, I want to be clear that I have not called them so I don't know firsthand.

It basically states that private, person to person sales are not exempt but everyone should still be wary of letting people onto your farm or going onto other peoples farms. Practice more biosecurity than you normally would, etc.

Is anyone near Athens looking for a good goose? She's lonely.

I have a Female (about a year old, egg laying) female Chinese White goose who needs a flock. She lost hers recently to predators and she needs a flock. She's great with adults, but right now is NOT with my elementary age kids. We're going to stick with chickens but need her to get a flock asap. She's not okay with no flock. We adore her and don't want her to be alone. She's going to make beautiful babies for someone. She likes pets, will mow the lawn and eat the weeds. She's good with chickens. Anyone in the Athens area willing to add her to their flock? She's free. She needs a goose family. She's purebred from Metzer Farms. We love her, but we want her to have a goose family. We'd love photo updates if you're into that.
