YO GEORGIANS! :)

Hi everyone! I am new to this site, and am a bit overwhelmed!

My husband is military, and we are stationed in Valdosta, Ga. I just got my first two chickens this week! I am so excited. I would like 2 more, but it is hard to find anyone around the area that will allow me to purchase that small of amount (the minimum is 5 or 6 at all the farm stores).

You can check in the BYC swap meet/chickenstock section if there are any swap meets close to you where you'll be able to purchase one or two . On the last Sunday of each month there's a swap meet at the Bent Creek feed store on the west side of Jacksonville, Florida. We go there occasionally. I think theres a couple swap meets closer to you off I-75 in Florida....not sure where they're at...abit too far from us. Just a word of advice...if you get new chickens, practice biosecurity.

Hello fellow chicken lovers!!!!! My name is Elaine and my husband is Phillip - we live in Ellijay Georgia which is 90 miles north of Atlanta in the GORGEOUS Blue Ridge Mountains of extreme north GA - and are 'expecting' our first baby chicks to arrive this week from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. We initially ordered Welsummer's - 2 males and 15 females. The day old chicks were scheduled to arrive this week and
today we got a call from the hatchery telling us that - sadly - none of the Welsummer hen babies hatched out so they gave us a couple of
options of other breeds OR wait until mid-May when they will have more Welsummer's hatch out. We picked Plymouth Barred Rocks and
because of the price difference - will be getting more baby chicks for our money - now 24 females and 3 males. Phillip just completed the
gorgeous 'custom brooder box' today in his woodworking/cabinet shop. We are very excited about our new 'chicken' adventure. Have
been following the forum for quite some time now.

Congrats and soon you must get an incubator too as many of us have eggs for sale...We have over 12 kinds of chicken eggs, then pumpkin hulsey, 6 kinds of turkey, 2 of geese and then 1 kinda duck....So many animals!!! and we love them all....Come back for any help you might need with the babies...you'LL need a really big brooder with that group of youngers!

You can find good and bad stories of any of the units so when I wanted one I decided to build my own. I am still in process..... I see a lot of mostly good comments on the Hovabators and the Brinsea units.

Hi Bargain - We jumped the gun and purchased a 48 egg incubator several months ago as we plan to hatch and sell 2-3 wk old chicks
at our local farmer's mkt which is in Jasper GA. Our brooder box is 6 feet long, two feet wide and two feet deep which we're hoping will
be large enough for the 27 baby chicks. We had anticipated only 17 total before the hatchery called yesterday to change breeds on us.
Thanks for the offer of help on the babies - I'm sure we'll be taking you all up on it quite frequently as we are chicken newbies.

Take care,

Hello fellow peep lovers - Just received our chicks this morning from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. Originally ordered Welsummers but
they told us a few days ago they didn't hatch out so we substituted Barred Rocks and ended up getting more chicks as the Barred's
were cheaper. Anyway, were supposed to get 24 females and 3 males and instead got a total of 54 baby chicks!!! My husband had
a brooder box built big enough for the 27 we were expecting but now we'll be needing another box in a couple of days for all of our
'unexpected' new brood! All 54 arrived seeming healthy and happy and a few hours later are seeming so far to all be thriving. Wish
us luck!
