Yogurt For Chickens!

Gave mine yogurt today and it was so funny watching them, stepping in it and just could not seem to get enough

Chickens LOVE yogurt! Mine do, anyway. I blend equal amounts of water/plain Greek yogurt *or kefir* and the pullets, plus their cockerel, love the 'white soup'. Sometimes, I put random tasty goodies in it or blend it with powdered layer feed.

Hello,
My girl heather took a 2 week break from laying after a brief brooding episode but now she's started to lay again & since laying she has laid beautiful perfectly shaped eggs NO soft shelled eggs NO deformed eggs just perfectly shaped eggs but i 'm not sure if she's getting enough calcium so that is y i 'm giving her plain yogurt almost everyday, However since my roo & my girl heather are feral & free ranging chickens my roo Henry has been eating yogurt along with my girl... Is it ok for them to be eating yogurt almost everyday or is it bad for them to have the yogurt everyday as i heard it can cause kidney problems for the rooster?? If so i need to STOP giving it to the rooster... Thanks everyone!

yogurt is good for their digestive system, probiotics, helps build up the good bacteria after worming or illness plus they like it. I like to mix oat meal (dry) with it so it isn't so messy

Incorrect, yogurt as any dairy product is not healthy for a bird's digestion. They can't digest the lactose which could lead to digestion problems. The probiotics found in yogurt is what's healthy for them, not the yogurt itself. A better alternative is poultry probiotics, fermented feed or kefir (lactose is consumed by the kefir grains).

It's bad for ALL of them, see my above. If you're going to provide yogurt, do so no more than once a week. But it's best to provide one of the alternatives listed above.

Hi,
My roo henry & my girl heather LOVES IT!!! I buy the meadow gold plain yogurt & dice the grapes & mix it in they go crazy for it!!! & i just love to watch them gobble it up!!!

I read somewhere you could mix yogurt in a bit of water for your chicks and decided to try it one day (my daughter calls it chicken smoothies 🤣). I planned to let them have a taste before I cleaned out their water dish. They usually drink one, maybe 1.5 buckets of water a day.... I had to fill it FIVE or SIX times in a row because they drank the water bucket DRY once I put a bit of yogurt in it the first time. I think it’s safe to say it was a HIT! I’m not sure about the actual health benefits of it but I do know they LOVE the taste of yogurt lol 😆
